Or we could just come out with a decent default theme and then start requiring people to conform to the semantic standards :P

shouldnt there be 3 options

tables-normal (pretty much smf standard)
tables-less (meaning no tables except for tabular data)
tables-none (meaning no tables whatsoever)

So make the second 'tables-where appropriate' and you might have a winner!

But how about 'divs-where appropriate and not just as blanket replacements for superfluous tds' while we're at it? ;)

PS Better use dashes instead of hyphens as well, but just sticking with the given format! >:D

Ah, tableless makes me think tables = non-existant ;P

And to make a tableless layout, does that include editing index/Board/message/Display.template.php files?

P.S: Hey, why are you posting! You're supposed to be on vacation =P

Dannii

Table-less layouts can still use tables for tabular data. The point is they don't use tables for the layout. Unfortunately, almost every theme that says it's table-less, uses tables for layout purposes!

It would be interesting if the default SMF 2.0 theme was tableless. :)

Do some searching for semantics

I would love to have the "old(from 1.1.x)" default-theme, tableless in 2.0 because its the base for my current theme developing....

And i would also love to see such a theme like in the new phpbb3 and VB Themes, where the user-data is above each post instead of next-to.. this of course also tableless

Yes. Posts look more tidy and professional when the information is above it.

Hmm i dont understand right what you mean.... I dont know if they ever will release their own template.... but it seems that it runs with the 1.1.x branch of SMF.
Hmm maybe ill ask them if they can tell us from where they got this template or if its self-made, if they will release it...

What I'm asking is if they actually released it for public use so we can download it. I've had a look around and it looks like they have made it, so they probably won't release any part of it.

I've always preferred the mini-profile to be on the left of each post, but there are themes on the theme site that have the mini-profile above the post.

And IMO, table less layouts just seems like a fad.

"Table-less" designs are bad, semantic designs are good.

Tables, where they are appropriate, work great.

People who would take a spreadsheet and align it using divs are just a stupid as people who insist on using only tables for design.

And if we DONT then we're "Anti-semantic" like Mel Gibson?? ?? ?

青山 素子

I think you mean "anti-semitic". I don't think anyone yet has assessed Mr. Gibson's views on semantic web design.

(Can the previous post be considered a case of Godwin's Law?)

I don't see why tables are deprecated. They're good for tabular data! =O

Which is their purpose. Semantic design uses tables where needed, on tabular data.

Thanks for that.
Have any of the themes actually had their descriptions fixed yet?
