Hi, just wondering if theres like auto install script, like a multiforums for people who want to give out free hosting and provide smf as a board to host for people

IPB has it and phpBB, i reckon if u guys give it out and make one, u would be a great competitor to IPB, i really like smf

Ben_S

Are you sure what you are saying IPB and phpBB has aren't mods written by their communities not by the dev teams for the respective products themselves?

If someone wants one, they can write one, personally, I'd rather see one not released and those serious about hosting boards for people do the work themselves and create their own, that way, they are more likely to care about doing it in the first place and still be around in six weeks/months time, rather than get bored and leave loads of people with theirs boards disappeared off the face of the net.

well this probably would be a custom mod for just us and I don't know php and icewind knows just a tad a php so its not really something we can make though their has to be someone here that can make one for our host, we would really appriciate it. ;)

So you *know* icewind and/or are 'working' together?

My advice is simply to leave hosting to folk who know what they're doing and try to target some more suitable projects for yourselves! ::)

So I know you didn't ask me, but I'm exercising my right to free speech in advising you not to try!

ryanbsoftware

well its my right to not care, and i don't care what you say about it, we are doing it anyway.  :P

Have to agree with Ben and Peter: me too think people who want to offer a forum service should be able to write the script modifications which are needed for that...

Throughout my time as part of the YSE/SMF community, I've seen plenty of free hosting services come and go, mainly because they were set up by people who never understood what they were really doing and the implications of how they had things set up and so their services was easilly compromised, or they used a stupidly cheap/free host that offered the earth and never delivered.

Without a proper idea of what you are trying to do, and plans to keep it running (like a biz plan not just "oh I'll keep it running") then you shouldn't put other peoples data at risk. Just my opinion of course.

Just noting 100% agreement with Ben on both these replies!
