Dear SMF developers/users,

The "Hide my email address from the public" checkbox in the user profile section gives the impression that if it is checked, it will be impossible for readers of the board to gain access to your email address, however:

It is still possible to view the email addresses of members who have chosen this option, via the member list.
Hovering the mouse over the email icon reveals "mailto:[email protected]" in the browser status bar.
Clicking the icon launches your email program, with the address already entered for you.

Just thought I'd bring this to your attention, in case you weren't already aware of it.

Hmmm, it doesn't seem to work like that on this forum, it must be due to the way other forums I've used have been set up. Please disregard the above post, I will instead bring it to the attention of the forum operators.

This forum is running off a beta version in which these functions were changed.

If a member has their email address hidden, the icon will not show up indicating such.  This is an option settable in Profile > Account Related Settings, if the forum admins have this option enabled.

2.0's email handling is a seperate form where the member NEVER sees the email address if that option is enabled.

This mod for 1.0.7 and up will provide similar functionality

Are you able to tell us how to disable this by default, so all users registering have hidden email addresses, unless they choose for it to be public. I don't want my users being spammed. Thanks in advance :)

Well, you can have the hide email box checked by default (so they HAVE to uncheck it if they want their email public, and reset current members as well

Thank you for the help :)

I had tried looking for the code to try and check it (I'm not that good with HTML/PHP) but I was looking at Register.php in Sources dir.

Thanks again for the help ;)
