look at the Settings.php (found in you forum directory) if you find this string:
$db_character_set = 'utf8';

PortaMx converts the tables automaticly to utf-8, if that set in SMF settings ...

Fel

Apparently it does say that so I'm going to attempt to try and create a new database and transfer my site to a new database that doesn't show utf8.
I'm assuming that's the only way I can get this mod to change to plain English, right?
Sheryl

If you have the utf-8 string in you settings, simple remove it (or comment out).

Then run the file dbremove.php to remove the portamx tables.

To recreate the tables run dbinstall.php.

Both files you find in the portamx archive. extract these files, copy it to your forum root and run it in the above order.

Fel

sheryltoo

Thank you for explaining all this. I'll give this a try.

I'm not sure if I did something wrong but after running the dbremove.php file, I lost my site and couldn't run dbinstall.php.
Fortunately I had made a back up so all wasn't lost but how exactly should I have run that first file?
I extracted those two files into my root directory, then typed the path to get to it which would be something like this, with dbremove.php at the end:
subdomain.domain.com/dremove.php
I did the same thing putting dbinstall.php at the end to try and reinstall the tables.

Maybe I should try to uninstall the mod and start over.
I did comment out that utf line and hopefully I did that right.
I just put two // and a space in front of that line.
Is that right?
I don't understand this php language but I did buy a book on it and I believe that's what I'm suppose to do.
Sheryl

feline

I dont known why that not works ...

And yes, the // is a correct comment for php

But .. while the tables exist, they will not created. If the dbremove.php not works, the you have to remove the tables with you cpanel - phpMyAdmin or what else you hoster supported.

If you have problem whit this all, PM me, I can help in most situations.

Fel

sheryltoo

I think I'll try and uninstall it and remove the tables in php myadmin and then reinstall everything but I may not attempt this until tomorrow.
If I run into problems, I'll send you a pm.
Thanks for trying to help me.
Sheryl

sheryltoo

I decided to try uninstalling the mod tonight before I went to bed.
I did the uninstall from the admin panel, and then removed the tables using php myadmin and once again I lost my site.
Stupid me didn't do a backup just before dumping those files so I had to restore it with a backup from this morning.
Why can't I remove those tables?

It's very late for me so I'm going to bed but if you happen to come back here tonight and have any ideas, I'd love to hear them.
Otherwise I'll try sending you a pm tomorrow.

The uninstallation has bug free?
Tell me the error message you see after removing the tables ..

Fel

sheryltoo

I'm sorry but I can't tell you the exact error because I didn't save it but it said something about portmax and not seeing tables I believe.
After trying to remove the tables using both dbremove.php and phpmyadmin, I got the exact same error when trying to access my site.
As I mentioned earlier, I couldn't run dbinstall.php after I removed the tables and I don't know why.
I was able to remove tables on a test site since I had tried it there first but I can't remove these tables from my active site.
I'm assuming it may have something to do with mods I've installed or perhaps because my active site was originally created using Fantastico and showed utf8 for the language.
I had changed the language to English and deleted all foreign languages after upgrading to RC1 since it didn't like all those languages but as I stated earlier, utf was showing in the settings.php file only I commented it out before trying to remove and reinstall the tables.
Could that have anything to do with not being able to remove the tables?
I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't commented out the utf code before running dbremove.php but to tell you the truth, I don't want to experiment.
It took me all day yesterday to fix my site after losing it when I tried to remove the tables.
I really like the mod but I can't seem to make it work correctly on my site which is disappointing.
One other thing I'm wondering about.
When I installed it, I had to change all the permissions manually. Should I have changed any permissions when I tried to remove the tables?
Again, I don't think I want to attempt to try anything unless you can tell me a sure way to fix this.

Hi Fel, I am testing your portal on the core SMF 2.0 RC1. It is great. I know you have mentioned the users not to remove the copyright from the public view. That's normal. However, your copyright message is too far above the core software SMF and it has wasted space. I know SMF does not allow hard coding (or encryption) in any of their associated scripts. Can you advise me how to move it down so it will be nicely together with SMF copyright footer? I can still keep yours on top all the time if SMF agrees with it. I just want to have a neat solid footer like Simple Portal footer. I do appreciate if you has the same view.

Thx!

feline

@sheryltoo .. without a look at your server, I can't say whats wrong.

That is not possible.

I don't know if this means anything but after having so many problems with my active site, I decided to install it again on a test site because I do like the mod but after 3 tries, I have given up and after all three tries, I had to have my host site change some permissions on the folders for the smf files because I no longer had access to them.
I couldn't delete two portamx folders, editor_uploads and fckeditor along with all their contents and I couldn't delete the smf folder itself.
Another thing I noticed when I tried to install this for a second or third time on my test site, I didn't have a portamx folder but I'm pretty sure I remember seeing one when I originally installed it.
Maybe there's a conflict between this mod and my server. I'm not really sure and don't understand any of this but sadly, I have to give up on it.

Just one more question. Those folders I mentioned, "editor_uploads" and "fckeditor," are they suppose to get removed when you unistall the mod? I see they're still showing in the active site that I originally started talking about.
I'm not sure what would happen if I tried to delete them or if I can even delete them since I couldn't delete them in a test site.

Normaly all installed files and folder are removed on uninstall.
The databese tables you can remove with dbremove.php, that you find in the archive.

For your (and not your) problem you should be read this article:

Actually I did read that thread when I first tried to install this mod since it didn't show up in my admin panel.
I changed the permissions and was able to install it on both my test site and my active site but the active site didn't install correctly since I was missing a box for the block title and removing the tables removed all my boards.

I still have the tables on my active site because I can't rid rid of them without losing all my boards.

As I say before ... Without a look at you system, I can't get better support.
