Um not sure about this "converted tables to InnoDB" I did try your code change but it did not improve the speed at all.

I am now starting to think that this is not just a FF issue but alos related to what security software you may be running (Norton , McAfee and so on)

In this video I have McAfee installed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RyP6YSvPlY&feature=channel_page

Here I have nothing installed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3fzUPdkktM&feature=channel_page

And Here I have Trend installed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-RCHe9wMWI&feature=channel_page

Now all the above do not seem to have any affect on the speed when tested on other forum software

...ouch. It may be because of the recent vulnerability that updated virus scanners are checking on each page load. I use Antivir, myself.

Yes but it is only some of them that seem to have a problem with RC1. I had ZoneAlarm running before and had no speed issues. This is why I was having a problem trying to work out why some members on my forum had an issue and I did not. It was only when I changed to McAfee that I made the connection that maybe it was not only FF that was the problem  :D

I have the same kind of slowdown as DirtRider and I do not use McAfee nor any security suite.  My antivirus is CA.

I completely uninstalled Firefox, downloaded it and reinstalled it from scratch.  I eliminated four addons - two were Java addons.  My speed has increased considerably.  However, on some pages, the forum tends to hang (though this hanging time is reduced) and the PM module still causes a slowdown that carries over to the rest of the forum.  I only experience this with RC1 forums.  I realize our forum has a lot of graphics and calls; but 15 plus seconds for a page indicates something is wrong.

I can't reproduce this behavior on my system with any of the 2.0 forums I help manage.

Now that I have Trend running it is back to normal so it seems that it is only some security software that it slows down with. However this software does not affect other forum software or web pages in the slowing down. Please see these videos that I captured of the problem

In this video I have McAfee installed

With or without CA running, mine is the same.  Unless I get a PM popup or go to the PM module, RC-1 forums load fine - albeit more slowly than most other forum software. The longer I stay logged in the slower it becomes, but not drastically slow. If I go to the PM module or receive a PM popup, loading times then run 20 seconds plus per page.  If I open up another RC-1 forum - including this one - while remaining logged in to our fourm, the newly opened RC-1 forum is just as slow. If I close out all RC-1 forums and log back in, the loading times are normal.

Please post a list of the mods that are still installed after you removed some.

No it is not a host issue as it is only affecting some members see my reply above

If members have different settings, then different queries will be run. If the host is slow, then it will be more apparent for the users. Who is your host?

We were running 1.1.8 on the same host it was only when we upgraded to RC1 that our problems started

SMF 2 has new features, which if enabled will result in more or different queries. Generally more features, will result in a slower site. Normally, this won't be noticeable. Some of our big forum users with over 500k posts are using SMF 2.0 just fine. However if you've on a overselling host there may be visible slowdowns, as is the case here. I did a lookup on your site and I see you're using hostmonster. They are a known overseller. I recommend you search google for: hostgator overseller

I suspect will be able to improve your sites loading speed even if you remain on hostgator, however the fact remains that there are many better hosts out there

Please believe it; it occurs consistently when a PM module has been accessed in any RC1 forum.  If I have a PM at Triumph Talk or access the PM module, the slowdown occurs and carries over to any other SMF that I visit including this one.  This did not manifest itself until two things happened almost simultaneously: we upgrade our forum software and I upgraded to Firefox 3.XX.

There is a definite problem between RC1 and Firefox 3.xx.  The problem is not my ISP nor my internet connection.  Nor is the problem with our host server.  IE6 continues to load at its same speeds when Firefox has slowed to 20 - 40 seconds (actual time) per page.  I installed a version of Firefox 2.xx and did not experience any slowdowns of RC1 software.  Keep in mind that other forum software packages do not load slowly when the RC1 forums are dragging.  Other websites load as they normally do.

I hope that a not to distant future release of SM software will correct this issue. If not, I will urge Dirtrider to find another software package for our forum.  I like the features of the SMF software and I appreciate the folks in the SMF community.  But 15 to 40 plus seconds per page is rather annoying.

Once the slowdown occurs, it continues to get worse the longer I am on line.  If I close out all SM forums and reopen them, the speeds are fine - until the PM module is accessed.

This will be difficult to do if we can't replicate it. I have done my own testing and can't reproduce with Firefox 3.0.10. What extensions and plugins do you have installed?

It did the same for me with all plugins disabled. But here are my current extensions and I am running  XP SP2, Firefox 3.0.10, CA antivirus (not the suite).

Adblock 0.5.3.043
Downloadhelper 4.4.1
IE Tab 1.5.20090207
No Script 1.9.3.3 (All forums including Simple Machine forums are white listed)
Linkification 1.3.6

I am running plugins for Garmin, Java, Microsoft, Mozilla, IE Tabs, Quicktime, Shockwave, and Windows Media player.

I hope this is helpful.  Please keep in mind that it seems to be the PM module that triggers the slowdown.

After posting actually video screen captures of this problem and posting them here it seem that we still cannot get the point over that some members are having a speed issue on RC1  ::)

I don't know if this will be helpful at all but here goes. Using Web Page Analyzer here http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ I get the following speed result.

So please I think it is about time we admit that we have a speed issue on RC1 and yes we all know that we have a warning not to use this software on a live site. So the question is now am I just wasting my time here trying to get this issue resolved. If so please just say so and we will peruse other options

The results you show are not based on any kind of network time, just raw size of the items. It doesn't include JavaScript execution times (just the time needed to download any external script files) nor rendering time. Looking at the sites, TriumphTalk and this site are both much more graphically heavy than the others you show. Try disabling your portal blocks and switching to the "Classic" theme to get a more accurate size comparison.

Running through the sites I was able to get a URL for from your post, here are the results in FireBug. The time loaded is the total time to load the page. This includes JavaScript and other elements.

URL: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php
Total Size: 242kb
Full Load Time: 3.22sec

URL: http://triumphtalk.com/index.php?action=forum
Total Size: 231kb
Full Load Time: 2.09sec

URL: http://www.advrider.com/forums/
Total Size: 156kb
Full Load Time: 2.17sec

URL: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/ (Interestingly, the slowest site of the list)
Total Size: 144kb
Full Load Time: 9.59sec

I'm on a rather high speed (for my area) connection of 20mbit down, which explains the fast load times. I'd be happy to test on the 1.5mbit line at my office tomorrow if you would like.

I don't think it is in doubt that you are seeing a speed issue. I also don't think it's being ignored. The problem is being able to replicate it so that the root cause can be tracked down.

Right now, there are a few people reporting this issue with the combination of Firefox 3 and the 2.0 code, but many more people are using the same configuration with no problems. That makes things especially tricky as there are lots of items in the mix to examine. However, once there can be a consistent way to trigger this behavior, it will be possible (although maybe not easy) to determine the cause.

No Script 1.9.3.3 (All forums including Simple Machine forums are white listed)

What happens if you disable Javascript for the forums? Do you still see the slowdown problems?

The things is the test I did are constant to what my members are reporting. From my side I am not the best person to be able to test this as I don't really have the best broadband connection available but the best available in our country  :-[ :D

We have tried running on the default SMF theme and it did not make much of an impact. However CarlT100 is experiencing this all the time. So lets wait for him to come online later and get more feedback from him. Although he has already given quite a bit in this thread already

We also already know that the page creation time is not bad at all

TriumphTalk - Page created in 0.218 seconds with 26 queries.
SMF - Page created in 0.063 seconds with 17 queries.

However it is the real time experience of the member using his browser that is the issue and the test I did seem to reflect and come very close to that overall
