It never really took off, especially when it was the source of a HUGE hole in the software :(

nobody ever told me what that was :(

It was actually a very small, easy thing to do :( A variable wasn't declared before and include which allowed people to include remote code which could be executed.

So an easy fix but it led to a lot of headaches :) Again, was something easily forgotten and has happened to countless others :)

I dont know if anyone here is into game editing, but with most games you can just stick a file in a directory and it will work alongside the game (Like a level or something, you put in a levels directory and it find its automatically, or a mod where any files overwritten are used from the mod but the rest are used from the original game?) Would something like this be possible? Although the problem with game mods like this is that they can conflict if they use the same files and not work.

Chris Cromer's personal message board has that sort of functionality. At its base level you can only really 'add' new pages (eg. the member map mod could be applied this way, even stuff like the calendar could be added minus the ability to post from the forum), he'll be making an better installer script that for more advanced functionality soon. Maybe you could get him working on it since he's on the SMF mod team anyway...

Basically a plugin system right?

Well.. I think that can wait until the next release.. for one thing it makes things slower.
