Have tried this on 6 mods and I get an error
Package uploaded but empty  ---------       text?

Through admin download, download a package by url...

If I upload the mod it does as normal and installs.

As it even says on the page you have to give it a proper filename. Supply http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2323 as the URL and sortable_packages.zip as the filename. It can't save it otherwise.

It downloads it but gives me this

Thats all I am saying

And it does the same your way

Although the package was downloaded to the server it appears to be empty. Please check the Packages directory, and the "temp" sub-directory are both writable. If you continue to experience this problem you should try extracting the package on your PC and uploading the extracted files into a subdirectory in your Packages directory and try again. For example, if the package was called shout.tar.gz you should:
1) Download the package to your local PC and extract it into files.
2) Using an FTP client create a new directory in your "Packages" folder, in this example you may call it "shout".
3) Upload all the files from the extracted package to this directory.
4) Go back to the package manager browse page and the package will be automatically found by SMF.

So if you look at the Packages folder in FTP, what do you find?

the package I uploaded in the most recent case avatar on index
and it shows in my admin packages browse page and I can install it from there....
it just gives me that error if i do it by the  packages download by url route

Arantor

And what permissions does the file have when it's downloaded by URL versus when you upload it yourself?

right let me start again because I an working on 2 sites and RC3 so am confusing myself.

Although it says uploaded to server it is not there,,, my packages folder in this case google member map does not show it as being uploaded to the folder,, neither does it show in my browse folder in admin,,, sorry was working on my 11 and ec2 site as well so got confused..

So to sum up it does not upload it to the server package folder. even though the script says it has. and all my files are 755.

so the upload via url, does not upload the file.... and I followed your instructions.

Arantor

Then the permissions are probably incorrect and SMF isn't actually allowed to contact external sites.

Snogmarr

well i dont have that problem in my rc2 and 111 site and its the same server.

Arantor

And all the exact same permissions and file owners?

Snogmarr

Yes same on everything, across all sites
I can connect through admin/download packages/ package server/Simple Machines Third-party Mod Site
And upload to my server as well,,, so SMF does have authority to do so.
But as you know this way gives you all mods 1.11. 1.2. 2RC1 etc and does not distinguish mods for the installed package.

I use mobile broadband when away from home so downloading then uploading to my server eats up my allowance, that's how I noticed it.
Just checked all my permissions to be sure and all 755 except settings php which is 644

Yes... on a Linux server every file has an owner and a group. Are they all the same?

Snogmarr

if by that you mean read write execute,,, owner group world then yes

If you mean something else then something has just flown over my head?
I think its called understanding!

Arantor

No, I don't mean permissions. I mean the names attached to those permissions.

You yourself point out the owner/group/all permissions. Who is the owner, who is the group?
