If it is Godaddy plain jane shared hosting then I bet you that it is overloaded. They don't care about the plain jane accounts it seems like to me. I am not saying this out of hate to Godaddy, because my sites are hosted with them, but when I had their shared Linux hosting everything was a nightmare. Please remember though, Godaddy uses 4 core processors, so a safe load average is 4. ;)

However, spikes is not a necessarily a bad thing as long as it does not stay that way. On a 4 core a load average of 4 is a work load of 100% of what your processor can handle. The work load can be higher than 100% for short spikes, as long as the majority of the time it is below that 100% to be allowed to catch up.

I do have a script of mine that can easily bring load up and over 100% the load average on basically any server. Does that mean the host is bad? No, it just means I have to watch how I use the script, don't run it at peak hours and use it only short spurts at a time. My host has been nice enough to let me continue to use this script because I am being responsible with the way I use it.

So if your going to check server loads you have to know your server. Your 100% load average depends on the number of cores your CPU contains. Loads above 100% particularly do not mean anything bad as long as they don't stay there for long periods of time, if they do then it might be better to look for a new host.

This is starting to look good! I didn't notice an answer for a guy who asked if it was possible to make the warning fade away after a few seconds, is it?

Or perhaps an easier option, to make it visible only to Admin?

By the way, thanks Paul for keeping track of us here.   ;)  (and great info about Go Daddy Nend, thanks)     ;D

This appears to be a very handy tool for a growing forum based website, that slows, it helps answer the question:

"Is it my computer that's slowing, or my server?"

there will be a 'show only for admin' option in the next version of this mod

 8) .............. Cool, thanx Paul....

BTW, who's the blond?

I will watch this board in the future. As you well know, there are over 500 entries in 1.1.11 mods, but I am a discriminating site owner. New, but discriminating.

With a limit on mods that can be used without internal conflict, only the practical ones should be considered, that give real measurable results.

"Fluff" if fluff, but "Stuff" is stuff.......     Your stuff is good stuff.   ::)

Keep it up Paul.

"tankx"..........     8)

thanks man! also the blond is britney spears ;)

Hello,

I was also going to ask if it's possible to have the actual CPU load visible to Admins only?  And if Admin then insert the actual number ($load[0]) in the "Hello (user) / date" line?  I ask because our site seems to always be close to the ISP resource limit.  If we never hit 3.0 we might think we're okay when in reality we might be running at 2.95.

That would really be helpful.

Grazie mille,

Cal

The load average that is returned is usually not the load of your website only but all websites on the server. So if you are on a shared host chances are your website is not the only one adding on to the load. If your on a shared host and your load is constantly over then you should either consider contacting your host to see what can be done or move on out to a better host who manages their servers allot better.

well yes but the point of this is to show you if the server your site is hosted on (if it's shared or not doesn't matter) is overloaded

Calling this function every load will stress the server?
Or its a "normal thing"?

(just being curious about it...)

btw, very nice mod, Im thinking about adding a jgrowl (or something similar) modal effect, etc...

i use it on a large site and it runs just fine and doesn't increase the load at all so you have nothing to worry about
