OK - (forgive newbie question here) - so find a SMF 1.x.x. version. Download onto my PC. Dig out the star files. Upload into wherever it was they are ( I will be able to find that bit)  - then bin the rest of the SMF 1.x.x. download?

If you're running v2+ the default installation comes with the Core theme so the images are already there for you to take. Look in your installation directory under themes/core/images

For anyone that might be interested here are the stars that I custom made for my site: home.comcast.net/~dreadful/images/stars.zip [nofollow]

They look great on a dark background but should look just as good on a light one since they have a transparent background themselves. I can easily create different colors if the color code or an example pic is provided.
This sentence is false.

MrPhil

If the image files have the same name and are close to the same screen size in 1.1.x and 2.0, you should be OK. Just be careful to upload in binary mode, and first save your old files somewhere in case you screw up with the new ones.

Binary mode????? What on earth is that?

MrPhil

When you use a file transfer method such as an FTP client, files such as images, that are not 100% human-readable text, must be transferred in "binary" mode so that no changes or translations are made to the data stream. If you transfer in text or "ASCII" mode, the ends of lines will be changed from the convention used at the sending end to the convention used at the receiving end. That would corrupt an image file.

The most popular FTP client, FileZilla, seems to have trouble sometimes figuring out which mode to use if you select "auto" (automatically select ASCII or binary). Either force it to binary, or at least keep watch on the messages to see that it selected binary.

Wouldn't it be easier to do a google search in images for 'Stars'

This what I found.
