Hi,
I installed a fresh forum and several mods, only to notice at a later time, at testing, that icons and smilies did not show. Instead text is displayed.
Figured some mod maybe broke the layout and deinstalled everything, then did a fresh install.
Icons and Smilies still do not show ...
Read the FAQ, searched the forum but found no thread. Maybe someone want to point me to it if I overlooked it?
Some ideas, please?

First question: Did you upload the files using Filezilla?

If so, go to the "transfers" menu and change the "Transfer type" to "binary", not "auto" which is the default. Then, try uploading the images, again.

If you didn't use Filezilla, can you check that the files are read-enabled?

kd@

Thanks for the quick reply  :)

I installed using cPanel (Installatron)
folder permission is 0755, file permission is 644.

You have other issues with your images. I just opened your site and none of the images are loading. But if I put the image link directly:
http://www.e-bookzone.de/Themes/default/images/off.png
it shows :o

Remove your database and forum files, then to do a "normal" install with our installer, instead of the Installatron one.

Yeah, those installers are notoriously... er... well... CRAP! ;)

Okay, thanks. I'll try my hand ...    ???

kd@

I'm quite disturbed.  :o
Deleted everything. Installed the forum again, following the provided link and the instructions to the letter.
Forum installed A-OK.
But... Images are still not displayed....     :'(

Some other ideas for resolving this problem, please?

margarett

I don't know if this is related to my company's proxy or if it is an issue from your site...

I open your forum: no images are displayed.
I right click in one of the missing images --> show image in new tab. The image shows in new tab.
I refresh your forum. That image now appears.

I have absolutely no idea what can cause that...

ETA: and now they don't show up anymore after refresh. But they still appear in new tab...

Yeah, I looked at permissions, all are in order 755/644.

As I tried to show the SMF logo by right click I got:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /Themes/default/images/smflogo.png on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I have wordpress running fine and displaying images (e-bookzone.de/blog) - may be this causes a problem?

margarett

It can also be a problem of ownership of said images. Check with your host.

As for WP, I never used it, but some users here report some disturbances when running SMF + WP. But it's usually when WP is the root and SMF is in a sub-folder. In your case, it's the other way around...

Ownership of the smilies?  ;)

I'd say it was a problem with the host, if the smilies in the blog would fail to display, too. But there they show all the time...    ???

EDT: just got the same curiosity... ticked from admin button to home, pics showed. Refreshed - gone. Stayed gone.

Who is your hosting with ?

kd@

Interactiveonline ...
Have been with them for ages, but only ran a small html website so far...

Are there any other files in the root of your site like a .htaccess file ?

kd@

Just checked ... yes, there is a htaccess and a htacess.preinstall, both 0 KB and empty...   :o
And there is a .ftpquota it says 2445 23166200 inside.
No clue where they came from ...
Should I delete them?

Storman™

Keep the .ftpquota file, as its used by cpanel when there's an additional ftp account in use that uses quotas. Keep it but just ignore it.

You could probably nuke the htaccess files if they are empty.

Going back to the original issue, are you using an additional ftp account to upload files ? I'm just wondering if there's some permissions problem with that account (it's use is identified by the quotas file). Might be an idea to upload files using the main ftp account ?

kd@

1) okay and
2) okay.

3) the domain 'e-bookzone' is an addon domain. I created the database and uploaded the files using the main account, as there is no seconday access possibe, that I'm aware of since I'm the only one using it all by my lonesome self...  ???

What I'm not getting my head around is that the WP in the additional folder behind SMF  is working properly ...

Ah, well ...
Obviously nobody has an idea how to fix this image/button/icon/smilie problem.    :(

Did the delete/re-install thing again, and same old. As far as I can see it, the forum runs properly, just the darned images do not show up ...

Can it be that the language pack (german) somehow is responsible?
Anyone? Please?

Edit: switched the language to english, same result    ;-(

this gives me a 403/forbidden error... if I hit it directly
that means that you have SOME sort of "protection" which is preventing access to your files

either the images directory is read protected
you have some sort of really stupidly configured mod_security
or you have something else configured incorrectly...

hmmm... if I go to your main page first, then the image shows...
if I do a hard refresh, then it stops...

it looks like you have a badly configured HTACCESS which is trying to prevent hotlinking.... (and doing a piss poor job - basically blocking everything except access when the root domain is the previous page in the browser history)

Well, I looked in the error log and it shows the 403 at:  e-bookzone.de/Themes/default/css/index.css?fin20 [nofollow]

there is no htaccess file in the root, directories are 0755, files 0644 ...
I have a wordpress blog set up in a directory, (e-bookzone.de/blog) the images and smilies show up properly there...    :o
Shouldn't those be blocked, too if the cause would be the mod_security ?
Or am I being a blonde in this case ...  :'(

EDIT: I'm such a blonde dork. Thank you, mission accomplished. It was a .htaccess issue after all.
Forgot that the the addon-domain needs permission ....     duh

Have a round of brownies on me all together! Merry Christmas all together!
