mybb 1.6 always getting connection errors
« on: May 05, 2015, 08:27:54 PM »
The wiki page found here: http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Converting
says   "Access to both databases must be provided to the user for the SMF database, or reinstall SMF in the same database as the forum that is being converted."

By the way, the wiki site http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Converting gives links that are out of date. It took a while to locate the 1.6 conversion zip in this community rather than at the wiki.

I finally found the way to add a user to the existing Mybb database using cpanel (at SiteGround).

The 1.6 converter now at least starts without any error messages. But now I get this every time:
          Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

I have tried over and over with intervals in between, probably 25 times by now. It never can connect.
Please help!

Hi and welcome ;)

Yeah, converters are way out of date in the donwloads page... We're working on it ;)

Did that error occurs after the conversion ends or while converting?

The error occurs at the very beginning of the conversion process. There are no other messages.

My version number is 1.6.12.

My board does have users on it, I notice now. I don't recall that the instructions said to deactivate mybb. Please let me know if that is the problem.

I have read a lot about the dreaded 'birthday' error. What are the chances of making it through the conversion process with no errors?!

No, there is nothing wrong with it.
The converter creates a "duplicate" of your existing MyBB content, in SMF. They are separate instances with no relation whatsoever. In fact, I always recommend that you DON'T shut down your "origin" forum. Instead, "play" with the recently converted SMF forum, see if everything is in place, etc. When and ONLY when you are prepared to swap completely, then scrap SMF, reinstall it, reconvert and then shut down your forum.
When I converted to SMF (many years ago :P ) I repeated the conversion 3 times (2 for "playing around", 1 for real)

That being said:
If you have members already converted, that means that part of the process was performed.
If you can now see SMF again, that means that your database connection was dropped by the server and then resumed at some point (but the converter has failed already so it's no use). Conversion is a very intense process on the server, it might be exceeding the resources that your host allows you to use.

I can only recommend you 2 things:
a) talk to your host and ask them if they notice any excess of resources when the converter is working
b) export your current MyBB setup, import it in your local machine with XAMPP or WAMP (no idea how you can do this with MyBB though...), install SMF locally too, convert locally, then move the converted SMF to your host again.

I cannot play around with SMF after the Database Busy error when running the converter.
The converter gives the database busy error immediately. Perhaps 1 second passes, not two, and no other messages come up before the error.
Then now I notice that when I try to log into my new installation of SMF, I get the same SMF Database Busy error.

Ah, ok. That is different (weird, nonetheless...)
Can you check if Settings.php still contain valid information to connect to your database? And if you go to phpmyadmin, is the database still there?

Was SMF working correctly before you start the conversion? Could you login with your created administrator and see the "General Discussion" standard board?

Thanks for the speedy answer!
I reinstalled smf today and got the same error.
Settings.php contains all the right information, such as paths, password, database prefix, etc.
phpmyadmin under databases lists both the mybb and new smf database that I created with my newest install.
Before I got the Database Busy error I reported in my last e-mail, I was able to log in to the SMF forum and see the default General Discussion forum. I did not actually open it or make a post.

I contacted SiteGround, they said this:
The information listed in the ticket leads me to believe that Mysql details might not be correct so I would advise you to double check them. If you want our developers to check and help you convert the application, please post a new ticket under Other Web Development Request category.

And they also said that the cost for helping me convert would be $50. Because of the number of our threads, another paid service I found would cost over twice that.

I have no idea how to check the Mysql details.

Waiting a couple of hours has not healed the Connection problems error message for my SMF installation. It still says
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

Doing like you said before sounds possible. I use LinuxMint and am not sure how to what you said here:
export your current MyBB setup, import it in your local machine with XAMPP or WAMP (no idea
how you can do this with MyBB though...), install SMF locally too, convert locally,
then move the converted SMF to your host again.

I am wondering if converting MyBB to PhpBB would be easier, and would the conversion from phpBB to SMF be easier.

Thanks!

The 2-way conversion is probably not a good idea.

If you PM me your login details to your SiteGround control panel (where I can access both your files and your database) I can try to do that for you. I can even investigate the converter itself ;)
For free :P
