Category New Message Flag disappears even when there are still new topics in Cat

I tried searching for a post about this, but I was wondering about the behavior of the category level new messages flag (that shows a graphic when the category contains new messages)--it seems to reset after you read a single new topic within the category even if other topics are still marked as new.  Is there any easy way to change this behavior so it will continue to show the new messages icon at the category level if there are any topics marked as new with that category?
