sorry for necroposting, but this is still an issue.
I tried to find the file where to edit the textline manually, but could'nt find it.
Can anyone help me by telling me which file contains the text
"The avatar you have selected is either too large or not an avatar."
?
would really appreciate help!

Greets,
Frank

Use something like Notepad++ to find strings in your installation.

thank you!
I already use notpead++, the problem was to find the correct file in which to search for the string.

After a lot of googling I found a workaround to make this : Adding in-text search for php files in the windows search options and adding one of the forum backup folders to the search index.
for others facing the same problem, this helped me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rTgrrUGJz0 [nofollow]

Notepad++ has a "find in files" option - you could have pointed it at the whole Themes directory and it would have found the string ;)
