I have a similar problem, I have a VPS with ISP. I`m planning a non-commercial project - a forum.

I have a similar problem, I have a VPS with ISP. I`m planning a non-commercial project - a forum. Thus, having spent on VPS with ISP I wouldn`t want to spend even more money on maintenance. I have a server hxxp:www.time4vps.com/ [nonactive]. I`d like to get step by step guide, not the one that someone here suggested. I mean, what services to run (php, MySQL, etc.)? Which settings to put and how to match the encoding with the encoding of the forum and so on? Where to copy, where to put - the more detailed the better. I think a lot of people have similar problems when some don't plan on spending tons of money, because installation and maintenance costs are already tightening the budget.

Here is a 4 point plan.
1. I would suggest starting with 2.1, not 2.0.  2.0 is only getting security patches at this point.
2. Make sure you follow the minimum specs: https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/SMF2.1:Requirements_and_recommendations
3. Follow the installation procedures: https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Installing
4. You should run https: https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=555034.0
