Displaying calendar events

Is there any way to display an events list from the calendar in the news?

Not without writing the functionality to do so; the news is designed for a few short items of news.

Alternatively, it would be great to ba able to show Calendar output outside the SMF information center, e.g. below the news. The calendar is a great part of SMF, and it is also very useful for many forum communities, but is currentely somewhat hidden away.

Also, beeing able to show all related events for a category and not only per thread would be very useful.

With that said, many thanks to the development team. 2.1 is a great improvement of SMF.

That would be possible with portal blocks, although it may need a custom block code or two. That's not an insurmountable problem. People whip up custom block codes fairly regularly, for various purposes.

That pre-supposes you have a portal installed first though...

No, it presupposes you are prepared to install one if you want to make custom functionality like that. Either that or you get a custom mod written to do the same thing. Either way it's mod territory.
