Reports of High Server Load

I and some of my users have been receiving sporadic reports that "the server is under high load, try again later" when attempting to display a list of posts. I have verified with my host that there have been no incidents of excessive server load in the past several weeks. The error message seems to appear only when listing a specific user's posts, listing unread posts, or listing updated topics. Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

admin -> maintenance -> load balancing and uncheck enable load balancing by load averages and save the page.

Done. It'll be a few days before I can tell if it worked.
