I have an SMF 2.1.4 forum on a free server (infinityfree).
Everything works fine, but the free server does not allow sending emails (they don't want to be abused by spammers).
I tried enabling SMTP TLS and using Gmail SMTP, to use Gmail, but without success, and without any feedback on why it doesn't work - whether it's Gmail SMTP that doesn't like it, or some configuration error.

In fact, when reading topics about SMTP on this forum, I never managed to understand if anyone can or did use it or not...

Gmail probably won't work anymore because requires OAuth/app passwords

I generally though  don't use SMTP accounts for SMF but something like mailgun, sparkpost or sendgrid may work or amazonses.

In my math forum I could only get emails to work using SMTP with proton or whatever it is from the cpanel. I guess you just need to test and see what works.

Answering my own question:
"Gmail discontinued support for less secure apps in May 2022"
To use Gmail's SMTP, "two-step verification must be turned on"
So, I went to my Gmail account, Settings, and following the Help, I requested "two-step verification".
I was asked for my mobile number,
received an SMS with a one-time code,
which I used to validate.
After that, Gmail showed a 16-character "app password"
(with spaces in the middle, strange).
Back in SMF 2.1.4 under Email\Settings, I entered this "app password" instead of the previous password for this Gmail account.

SMF 2.1.4 now sends emails from this free-hosting (using my Gmail account name)
Problem solved.

Thanks to everyone for the help.
