Pictures in posts are removed without warning?!

This is from another thread:

Quote from: DEG 1935 on March 22, 2024, 11:07:33 PM(Uh, I pasted a very small screenhot here, is that not possible with SMF?! At least it was shown in the editor, but has then be replaced with "[ing]about:invalid[/ing]" upon posting, "ing" should read "img" of course).

Did I overlook some config setting or is it indeed not possible with SMF to paste a bitmap from the clipboard into the editor and then send the post (without replacing/deleting the bitmap)? If the latter, this would be a definite showstopper for SMF.

First I thought this would be some issue with not enough posts yet or something, but then I realized that the same happens in my own forum as admin.

Before I decided to use SMF as forum software, I signed up at vguitarforums.com and tested some features, this being one of them. The picture was displayed in the editor, so I thought it would work. Of course I didn't send the post, as it was just a test account and the post just a test. I didn't get the slightest idea that the picture could be removed upon posting.

Displaying a picture in the editor but then removing it upon posting without any warning is not an acceptable behaviour.

P.S.: I know that I can attach and insert a locally saved picture, but this makes things more complicated (saving the picture, attaching/inserting it, and then deleting it again). Plus that it doesn't make sense to me to display the picture within and below the post.

I'm not completely sure what you ran in to here, but it could be a side effect of the mod we have that stops new members from posting links at all, and then for a while tags all links with nofollow. Maybe. There is nothing specifically stopping you from embedding images other than that that I could think of.

There is no option to directly drop a bitmap in the database though, so you do need to actually embed or attach.

EDIT:
Now that I think about it, it could also be some quirk in the editor itself - basically accepting content we do not. Maybe. @Sesquipedalian Would you be wiser?

EDIT2: You can actually configure SMF not to show an attached image twice, if you want. There is a setting specifically to not show thumbnails for attachments that are already embedded in the post.

I'm talking about Ctrl+V in the WYSIWYG editor (pasting an image from the clipboard). Is that what you mean with "embed"?

Didn't see that yet in the Posts and Topic section. But anyway, that would still not relieve me from first saving the clipboard content as a file, then attaching/inserting it, then deleting the file again.

To insert an image into a post, first upload the image as an attachment, and then click the attachment's Insert button. The button looks like an arrow pointing upwards.

Pasting an image directly into the editor doesn't work properly. In some browsers, the image might initially appear in the editor, but it won't work when saved.

We are aware that this can be confusing to end users. We plan to address the issue in an upcoming version of SMF.
I promise you nothing.

You can not paste an image into the text editor with ctrl-v.

You have to either attach it -- or have it hosted and paste the image url

I know... (see above). <sigh>

But a) that's way too complicated, and b) this dialogue as well as it's implementation is ... how can I say ... not really usable for an average user:

  • Let's embed an arbitrary local image of 93KB and 1920×1080px: After clicking on the upward arrow, the dialogue then offers the user to enter width and height, but these fields are empty and do not show its original size in pixels. So the user doesn't have a clue how large (in terms of display) the image really is (and will be shown in the post).
  • So he accepts the empty fields, and the image will be shown in the post as quite a tiny image (probably with a default width of 150px?).
  • Now the user thinks "Uh, that's a bit too small", but from then on he doesn't have a chance anymore to change width or/and height again (unless he would be familiar with the syntax in the text mode editor, which won't normally be the case). But there is no button or something where he can revert/adjust this setting. In TinyMCE for instance, you click on the image again, then click on the image button, and then can adjust the size.
  • But in our case the user decides to leave it as it is (as the editor shows him and as he believes as it is) and sends the post.
  • Surprise: After sending the post, the image is shown in its full size of 1920×1080px. :o Now again he doesn't have a chance to revert this (other than editing the post, deleting the image, and attaching it again).

This is all apart from the clipboard issue, but these are my first experiences with embedding images in a post. In the meantime I figured out that you can click on the image in the post, press DEL, and embed it from the thumbnail below the post again (if thumbnails below the post are not disabled?). But this is definitely not obvious.

Anyway, my main issue still is that images are without any warning silently being removed when inserted from a clipboard.

Did I say that? No, I said:

Just read, please.

But even if I wouldn't have mentioned it, it should be clear.

You can not paste an image into the editor,  wysiwyg or not.

You can only paste a url.

What are you saying? Of course I can, otherwise we wouldn't have this topic! Geez... I really ask you to read the posts you are replying to.

Although Sesq says that some browsers might accept a paste of an image directly into the editor,  I'm not surprised it gets removed, because it's not intentional...

Smf expects images inside a post to be a url called by the img bbc... not a pasted image directly.

Also. Please lose the attitude.

Aha! And who does/did tell me that it's not intentional? SMF not, it just removes it silently without any warning (and replaces it with something else, so it seems to be prepared for this situation). It's a common feature in many bulletin boards.

"Some" browsers, "might"? I'll test it with Chrome and Edge later, let's see what they will do. Will report.

Quote from: Kindred on March 23, 2024, 11:23:13 PMAlso. Please lose the attitude.

Same to you! YOU are doing false statements such as "You can not paste an image into the editor, wysiwyg or not", and that as an Firefox user (who should know better if he would have tested it), plus a "Lead Support Specialist" and "SMF Legend". (EDIT: Sorry, forgot to mention "The Mean One".)

Again: How can you make such a totally wrong statement? Especially if you would have (really) read the thread before where it clearly says that the image had been perfectly displayed in the editor? Look at the responses from other participants, they did understand what I'm talking about.

Not only in this thread and not only to me you are talking to users "from the top down". So don't be surprised about the feedback then. I did more than once read here the word "period" from you in several posts already, although I'm here just for a few days. Apparently you believe to own the "final truth", although you don't.

So if there is someone here who should think about his attitude, then it's you.
