RECAPTCHA and Forum Index issue

After a few spammers annoyed me, I decided to implement RECAPTCHA rather than the simple text retype thing. I hadn't noticed this option had been added on my long running forum

Immediately, my forum stopped displaying the board index instead showing a white screen. I am running 2.1.4 TinyPortal 2.3 with a 'frontpage' of latest topics so the Board Index is usually accessed via a menu item (index.php?action=forum).

Having turned off RECAPTCHA and deleted the various keys, forum is refusing to go back to prior state so I suspect something has been added to a file which is corrupting that action. All other forum actions are working as they should but without boardindex adding a new topic is somewhat difficult.

Could someone suggest actions I can take to get my boardindex back? Where to start looking?

Many thanks for your help.

When you say: "implement RECAPTCHA", are we talking about the built in or a third party mod one? Can you access your admin panel? If you can, are there are any messages logged in at the Forum Error Log? If you can't access the admin panel, you can check the errors table in the database.

Additionally, can you check the Server Error Log page too?

Hi Doug, I implemented the built in RECAPTCHA via the admin anti-spam page. Everything is working fine except the board index, hence why I'm at a bit of a loss as to what has occurred and the suspicion it may be TinyPortal related. No errors in the error log at all.

It's weird as individual boards can be accessed using /index.php?board=45.0 or whatever and they appear fine. Only ?action=forum is producing a white screen.

Check the error log, both the SMF one and the server one.

Should have checked the theme - all working fine using default so that gives me some clues as to where to look.

Error log empty... server log empty.

Then ask your host why the error log is not recording what is obviously an error - white screens do not just happen.

Thanks Arantor,

I have now accessed correct server log - originally looking at wrong thing. Sorry

Server error appears from 9:20am this morning - exactly when CAPTCHA originally enabled from admin panel but only iro my theme - default theme does not cause the white screen - log shows as follows:

www.xyz.com [Thu Jul 25 09:20:05 2024] [error] [client 2a00:23c5:3096:701:5483:23f9:128d:6807:0] AH01071: Got error 'PHP message: PHP Fatal error:  Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 20480 bytes) in /home/virtual/vps-xxx/x/xxx/public_html/forum/Sources/Subs-Db-mysql.php on line 989PHP message: PHP Fatal error:  Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 65536 bytes) in Unknown on line 0'

As stated, this error seems to be theme specific.

EDIT: Tested and new error showing when trying to access /action=forum using my theme but no error when accessing using SMF Default.

Many thanks for any light you can throw on this

The theme that is causing this issue is NameX which is a Curve variant. As it isn't affecting things on the default theme, I assume this should be closed off and raised on theme support?

Unless anyone here has any bright ideas why a memory limit error might be reached after setting up ReCaptcha but only if a theme is used?

The joys of running a forum... when they work, just leave them alone!
