Why is this happening (BBC Weirdness)?

Screenshots attached.  This is a clean 2.1.4 Default test forum.  What causes the BBC tags to go all rogue like this?  Does it really matter what order you select them? They open and close correctly, but the closing tags will show up in the post, if I fail to do whatever it is I'm supposed to do.  I haven't figured that part out, yet. I do highlight all the text before selecting the tags. :(

Wow...   I have a "HELP" board on the forum.  What sort of order should I advise?  (I had no idea!)   :(

I think our BBC list in the FAQ is still broken.... :'(

let me see if I can find the list of the ones that matter

The [justify] BBC is a block level tag, whereas [font] and [color] are inline tags. So you need to put [justify] outside of [font] and [color], not inside.

When you use the WYSIWYG editor mode, this sort of thing will be taken care of automatically, but when you use Source mode, you need to nest the tags correctly yourself.
I promise you nothing.

It's not disabled in Post Settings.  Is there another setting for WYSIWYG, other than this?  Is it only the alignment BBC codes that are block level?  I may need to mention that to the members.  Lots of rogue tags in their posts.  ::)

Your screenshot in your first post shows the editor in Source mode. The button at the very end of the toolbar, with the icon that looks like a page filled with lines of text, is the toggle between the two modes. Click that button to toggle into WYSIWYG mode.

If you always want to start in WYSIWYG mode (or always in Source mode), there is a setting in the "Look and Layout" section of each member's profile that controls that. The setting is called "Load editor in WYSIWYG mode by default" and it does exactly what it says. If you want the editor to always start in WYSIWYG mode for you when the page loads, turn on that setting in your profile. If you always want to start in Source mode, turn the setting off.

If you also want to make this setting the default for all of your members, you can do the following:

  • Go to Administration Center ► Themes and Layout ► Member Options
  • Click on "Change current options for all members using this theme" for the default theme.
  • On the page that loads, select "Change" next to that setting, and then click the checkbox to the right of the setting's label text.
  • Save the changes.
  • Repeat steps 2 through 4 for any other themes you have installed.

Do note that even if you use this method to change the setting for all your members now, they can still opt to change it for themselves individually at any time.

I promise you nothing.

@Sesquipedalian

These screenshots are how I found it, and how I changed it.

It's a little confusing because after I changed it, I had the same issue:

You cannot view this attachment.

So I clicked the end of the toolbar, and it reverted to this:

You cannot view this attachment.

So, is that telling me that it was somehow already loaded before I changed it?  The "Don't Change / Change" is a little confusing when it's worded "Load WYSIWYG editor by default"  (I did see "default as an option, but there is no checkbox available with choosing that.)  When it's "gray" it's on?

Grammy

Oddly enough, I had to manually turn it on (gray, I guess) in the posting area, then go back to settings and do steps 2 - 4, for it to stay gray.  Or maybe that's not so odd, now that I'm thinking about it.  In any event, thank you guys for pointing me in the right direction.  You're right, with it turned on, it can handle putting tags "out of order".  Thanks so much!

changing the SETTING will not automatically force users who already exist to use the new setting... it only changes the setting for new user accounts. :P

you would have to go into your OWN profile to change the setting for you (and you can do that with the default set on or off)

I'm gonna have to whip out the angry emoticon and tell them that if they don't change their settings, to stop their whining!  :D
