I'm struggling to understand the need and purpose of Notification Settings in BOTH the Member Notifications and Board/Post setting?

I've conducted test on New Posts with Alerts set at that Board level and the respective setting in the Member notifications.

The tests shows that the Board setting is the domininant setting. That is - if you have (in The member notifications) both alerts and receive alerts and emails for new posts unticked - a Board level setting of alerts or alerts and emails will overide the Member notifications setting?

The settings in the member's profile define the member's default preferences. But once the member chooses one of the specific options for a specific board, the chosen option takes precedence for that board.
I promise you nothing.

Sesqu... Sesqui... what?

Thanks for the reply @Sesquipedalian . Yes; that's in accordance with my testing result, but since the default is No Alerts or Emails in Boards and Posts and that take precedence I'm still at a loss why we need both?

It's not really a duplication - it's the difference between a user default & a specific user request, which may override the default.

In the user profile, under Notifications, all the various defaults are defined for that user.

If they choose 'Follow topics I create and reply to', these defaults (emails &/or alerts) are used when they post.

If, when viewing a topic, they choose to override that, they can.  They can also request notifications on a topic they have not participated in.  Similarly, when viewing a board, they can request notifications for new topics in that board.

The end result is captured in the user profile, under Notifications, Watched Topics & Watched Boards.  That should agree with what they see when they visit the topic or board.
A question worth asking is born in experience & driven by necessity. - Fripp
