Is it possible in the Insert Width field to have small, medium and large? Instead of pixels - my member's are not pixel savy.  ::)
Kind Regards

Small on what screen? Large on what screen? That's why pixels are a thing.

This image (By Jedi787plus - Vector Video Standards4.svg, Vector Video Standards.svg, GFDL, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=37694717 ) is 8204x4332, that's quite large.

Here you can see it in 1026x542, which on my screen is fairly small.

You cannot view this attachment.

On most typical HD monitors, this would take very near the whole screen.

I'm not trying to debate, just trying to point out that "small" is relative to the user's hardware, and so it is actually difficult to name sizes like that.

Lex, OK fair enough - OK, let's say I attach an image and sized to 1024 pixels - that pretty much fills the post input box - regardless of screen pixel size -1920,1580, 1024, 768, 440 and 320 etc - covering standard destop monitors, laptops, notebooks, large tablets landscape, large tablets portrait down to mobiles .

So lets call this large.

Then, if I attach an image half that size (512 pixels) - so we call it medium. etc

Maybe, what would be better if any attachmeny just attached as a large image by default - or better still a max of 1024 pixels or actual image size if less than 1024 pixels.

@ColinJM I've moved your enquiry (and the responses) to it's own topic as what you're asking for has nothing to do with the Automatic Attachment Rotation (and Resize) mod (which is the support topic in which you initially posted your enquiry) - the option to specify the display width/height of images when inserting them inline is part of the core SMF functionality.

@GL700Wing ok - Thanks for your input. I've decided, given the extent of my member's non computer saviness to not promote sizing of attachments and have just set both the max width fields to 0.

Okay - now I'm a bit confused ...

In your first message you referred to 'insert width' and 'pixels' and I understood this to be in relation to the option window that is displayed when an attached image is inserted inline.
You cannot view this attachment.

However, in your most recent message you referred to 'max width' fields.

1. There is a field with the title 'Max display width of posted or attached images' in the 'Administration Center > Attachments and Avatars > Attachment Settings > Thumbnail Settings' and the 'Help' text for this field is as follows:
QuoteThis allows you to set a maximum size for posted pictures. Pictures smaller than the maximum will not be affected. This also determines how attached images are displayed when a thumbnail is clicked on.

Note: As explained in the help text the value of this field only determines the maximum display width of an image (ie, if the value is 240 an image that is wider than 240 pixels will be displayed with a maximum width of  240 pixels) - the attached image is not physically resized (ie, an attached image that is 4032x3024 pixels and 5.4Mb in size is saved to the attachments directory/folder 'as is' and if the 'Max display width of posted or attached images' field and/or the 'Max display height of posted or attached imagesk field has a non-zero value the image is displayed with the appropriate relative width/height values).

2. If you have the Automatic Attachment Rotation (and Resize) mod installed one of its settings is a field with the title 'Maximum width of attached images'.  The value of this field (and the value of the corresponding 'Maximum height of attached images' field) is used to determine the maximum width and/or height that attached images will be resized to before they are saved to the attachments directory/folder (ie, if the value of the 'Maximum height of attached images' field is 1024 an attached image that is 4032x3024 pixels will be resized to 1024x768 pixels before it is saved to the attachments directory/folder).

Note: The image resizing/compression capability of this mod is primarily used to save disk storage space - for example: the file size of an image that is 4032x3024 pixels and 5.4Mb can be reduced by 95% (ie, to less than 270kb) if it is resized to 1024x768 pixels with 80% JPEG quality.

@GL700Wing:o  :P - I had to read that five times before it permiated the sedimentary rock that my skulll is made of.

OK, let me TRY and explain and hopefully I won't die under a hail of bullets  ;D  ;D

  • I want to make things as simple and easy as I can for my non tech savy members - some of them are 80 - 95 years old.
  • The less my members have to do the more chance I have of getting them to accept and do things.
  • My aim was to make attaching as easy as possible, allow any size image - if I set a maximum they'll stop posting

SO:
  • The Admin>Attachment and Avatars>Attachment Settings-max display width of posted attached images is set to 1024 as an optimum post Display size
  • The Admin>Attachment and Avatars>Attachment Settings-Maximum width of attached images is set to 1024 - to optimise compression .

Please, remember your brain works at least 1,000 times better than mine  :P
Kind Regards
