What determines the content period of recent posts and updated topics please?

Recent Posts : action=recent
These are the most recent posts - both read and unread - and the number of posts displayed is configured in theme settings (and can be disabled by setting number to 0).

Updated Topics: action=unreadreplies
These are topics that have new posts since the user last viewed the topic.
