Hey folks, first time poster here. I just recently purchased a SMF forum that is absolutely riddled with ads, and need them gone. Pop ups are ruining it. I think its adsense related, but the people who sold me the page didnt build it and have no idea how to fix it. I need help big time or I will never be able to salvage the site. How do I remove all these pop-ups?

Is the ad management addon listed under packages in the admin area as installed?

I dont see it, on the installed packages I only see updated versions of the forum.

Then you are not using this mod and it is something else either ads in template files or infected site.

Can you advise me on how to deal with either of those two scenarios?

The SMF website I own is primitivearcher.com [nofollow] if you go to that page you will see all the adds and pop ups. Can someone help me with what to do to clear all that up?

I don't see any ads or popups at http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/.  It's a 2.0.7 install using default Curve, no obvious mods or customizations, appears to be running normally.

This topic should be moved to 2.0 support.

Ok, I suppose maybe the pop ups happen when logged in as a member. They dont happen on the main page, only the forum.

I recently purchased a SMF, Primitivearcher.com [nofollow] and the forum is inundated with popups for the members, often blocking most of the page with a hard to find X to escape it. The ads pop up every time you switch to a different page on the forum. I need to find out how to drop those and the people I got the forum from didnt set that up, so they can't help me either. If anyone can render assistance I'd really be grateful.

I see them on the main forum, even as a guest.  Navigate around a while, they'll show up.

Since it doesnt look like a lot of customization has been made, I'd refresh the code. While doing that, might as well upgrade to 2.1.4, IMO.

I don't see any ads or popups on the forum as guest.  The website homepage has ads, they're part of the page.  Not all display, some are being blocked.  Lot of bad links in the sidebar.  Looks like it's a very old (2000) Multimedia website.  I've registered (as Krash), if OP can activate I'll have a look around.

Looks like google auto ads one line of google code. And you have popups enabled on your adsense account.

I will be changing those Google ads as soon as I learn how. I dont have the log in information or know how for adsense yet, but if you can tell me anything about it, I'd be grateful, because I know nothing.

Im ignorant of how do do those things and of what the difference is between refreshing the code and upgrading? Also, what will doing those 2 things do to the page?

Sir Osis of Liver

Still don't see any ads when logged in.  Make me admin, will have a look at your package manager and error log.

Uploading a clean set of 2.0.19 files will restore your forum to clean install and upgrade it from 2.0.7 to 2.0.19.  All mods and customizations will be removed, the database will not be affected.  Any files that are damaged or hacked will be replaced.  Upgrading from 2.0.19 to 2.1.4 is a different process, it requires uploading the upgrade package, which replaces 2.0 files with 2.1, and running the upgrader, which makes major changes to the database.  I don't like upgrading a damaged forum, you should get to 2.0.19 and fix anything that's broken before moving to 2.1.4.

Google adsense ads are usually coded into templates or portal blocks, or I suppose they can be posted as news items.  You're not running a portal, but since I don't see the ads can't guess where they are.  If they're coded into templates uploading clean files will remove them.  If they're in the news fader they'll remain, even if you upgrade to 2.1, but you can just delete them from news items.  If you don't intend to run ads on the forum you should remove them first thing.

SOoL - don't you normally run a couple layers of ad blockers?

I definitely see them.

On mobile, it's awful.  Blocks 3/4 of the screen.
