Mini Aqua Buttons for SMF

Did some aqua style button sets for SMF. Small buttons take less space, but microscopic small fonts are not readable. So I tried to make some new buttons which are small and well readable (also for people over 30). Attached to this post is a screenshot of some samplers. All icons are new made from scratch, and any arbitrary button color is available. In additon the icon can be on the left or on the right side of the button. The buttons are available in 11 languages: arabic, dutch, english, finnish, french, german, hebrew, italian, norsk, spanish, swedish.

Credits go to the forum members who helped with the translation of the button texts: A.M.A, Compuart, Daniel Hofverberg, Lamper, Omar Bazavilvazo, Owdy, Skoen, Tomer Dean and xt600.

Very interested in your feedback. Especially I am interested in these questions:

  • general feedback
  • On which side do you prefer the icon: left or right? Is this preferency dependent of your mother tongue (meant in the sense: is maybe right position intuitive for native speakers of an RTL language such as arabic or hebrew, left position for LTR language speakers such as english, german, spanish, dutch, ...) ?

Attached are 2 screenshots, one with light background, and one with dark backgrounds.

very nice buttons Andrea
regarding the positions, I guess LTR languages prefer them on the left while RTL on the right.. it is much better that way.

P.S I would love to see how Arabic looks on those buttons!
Really sorry .. real life is demanding my full attention .. will be back soon hopefully :)

alienine

The icons are a tad bit too small in my opinion.

andrea

Thanks for feedbacking.

Happy you like them A.M.A. Just attached a bigger preview image to the 1st post containing also arabic samples. Should the font line be shifted upwards by 1 character? Not sure if the writing is a little to deep now.

What precisely means "tad bit": a little bit? Its just an english language problem for me, didn't know the word "tad"? Would 2 pixel wider be enough?

I agree with alienine I think they are a lil to small.
If they were all the size of the "Mark as read," "Notify," and "Reply" buttons they would be perfect.

Nice buttons andrea but can you make them lil bigger and keep the text the same size?

The whole buttons bigger or only the icons? Why bigger, is it because you can't read them? I made a bigger series of aqua buttons (I posted them in the themes thread, have you seen this thread?). Indeed for the mini button series the aqua effect is maybe better visible on dark backgrounds, attached a screenshot with the same sample buttons on dark backgrounds to the 1st post of this thread.

I find the icons are quite small and hard to make out. The icons do look better on the left though.

At first I though text was the I couldn't quite handle, but that's fine, the buttons are great, just the icons could do with being a little bigger really (I have bad eyesight though).

andrea

Thank you too for the feedback bostasp. The input to make the icons bigger is taken and that work is already in progress. It will however need a few days to work over all icons... I find it very interesting to find out which is the smallest graphic which is still recognizeable...

Yeah that's what I meant. They are too small in my opinion. Most people here have good english so I sometimes forget that there's non-english speaking folks here!

It would be nice if the icons could be bigger... and actuall go veyond the border of the buttons... kind of "stick out of them" like the buttons used on this forum. I'm not sure how they would look, but it is one thing to try.

Thanks alienine for explaining closer. I increased the icon size and attach an example to this post. If the icon would overlap then the button style would change, it would then turn out another button. In addition those icons are alpha transparent objects and must be antialiased to a specific background color. As the buttons are now they go theoretically on any background color, that means they will not make dark or white pixels if you change the bg color. Overlapping icons would destroy that important property.

Doing some aqua style themes for smf in various color schemes, which are planed to be released to the smf community. I have finished the blue and red theme. Here are the thumbnails for these two:

-------- [ edit ] --------
In the manwhile have done more colors: magenta, yellow, cyan, green01, green02, greenblue01 and greenblue01. Here are those thumbnails:

-------- [ edit2 ] --------
Most recent addition: black aqua theme

-------- [ / edit2 ] --------

I have already done bigger buttons with icons which overlap the border, you can see samples of the small buttons in the above thumbnails (from the dark style aqua themes (aquamania themes) which will be released after smf is out (me too wait for this, because cannot adapt daily some theme files).

The idea of the "mini" buttons is to be an alternative to the bigger buttons which are in those themes, for those who love small buttons. Hence they need to stay "mini buttons".

So here comes the new screenshot, this times with hebrew text and different colors. How are these?
