The file I am trying to edit is smf.php. It is in  /components/com_smf/.
It is according to the Mambo/Joomla <-> SMF Bridge (Combined Readme) UPDATED

But I cannot edit this file (smf.php) because it is write protected. I try to edit it through ssh and even tried modifying it locally and scp'ing it to the server but the file on the server is write protected and cannot be overwritten.

Anyways if anyone could help me out this would be great!
Thank you.

Go to your Joomla admin panel.  Click on Global Configuration.  Click the "Server" tab.

Set the file and folder permissions to 777, and check the box that says "Apply to existing files".

Click Save.

Now you should be able to access the files.

Will I need to set the permissions back to whatever they were or I can leave them at 777 ?

Thank you.

That's entirely up to you.  Whatever makes you comfortable.
