SSI make slow pages?

SSI makes pages to be slower?
I want to include more than 1 SSI to my main page but i think it's making the page to be slower 


I use php&smf1.0.7

For me, I have SMF in with php nuke and I have put up to 6 SSI calls on the main index.php page, and the server time has been .10 to .20 seconds, sometimes higher due to server load.  Purty fast .......  especially when I used to get steady .50 seconds and higher for displaying the same or similar info from php nuke.
