You should be able to use the permissions management interface to allow/disallow these things.

Post moderation could be used to make it such that only you (and I assume the poster, if the mod works that way) can view the poll.

Dainis

Can you explain or point me to the proper procedure to follow?

Sincerely,
Dainis

A.M.A

Admin --> Edit Permissions

you will be shown the (Permissions by Membergroup) screen .. click on 'modify' and you will be taken to that group 'Permissions' and will find (Polls) among others.
Really sorry .. real life is demanding my full attention .. will be back soon hopefully :)

Dainis

--actually, I'd like them to be able to post attachments, but that seems pretty easy--

I left the option values in, thinking that it might help...

So, here are some possiblities:
a) I don't know how to use the "post moderation" mod, which I installed. When I go to the Post Moderation Manager, even new posts do not appear there, so either I don't know how to use it, or it's not working properly, or both, or...hmm...

b) I could try the advanced visual warning mod, which I learned about at: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=628.0, and see if that works or if I can get it to work, etc.

c) Someone tells me how to use Edit Permissions to work this out (or helps me hack the permissions code).

d) Oldiesmann posted something about Boardmod at http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=10693.0, and it seems like there are a few people out there who've gotten "post moderation" to work (maybe m20i02m from http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=14318.0, but that didn't seem to go too well...) Anyway, if that's what I need to do, and SMF needs a procedure written up, and I can get help to get this done, then I'd be glad to chip in with my doc writing skillz and write up the necessary procedures.

e) This is really obvious, but I'm just not seeing what to do.

f) ...something completely different... (ahh, Monty Python!)

So, in conclusion: OW! Help my aching noodle! ooh! ouch!  :P

Can anyone help with the actual procedure?

Gratefully and sincerely,
Dainis

Hmmm..

a. Not sure... I've never actually used the mod, I just know what "post moderation" is.  Grudge?
b. I don't actually know exactly what that does, but it always seemed like more of a banning type thing.
c. Without a mod, you can't change whether people can view posts or not without making it so they can't post in that board... which is what you want, no?
d. Boardmod is a mod application program that is separate from SMF.  SMF has one built in.

Okay, so let's recap.  What you're looking to do is to make it such that:

Person A comes to your forum.  Person A has a post to make, and posts it.  After posting this, person A can see it, and so can you.  However, person B (who comes along later) cannot see this post person A made, but can make posts for himself.

That's your immediate goal, right?  After that, you plan to do all this poll business, correct?

Well, in SMF *view* permissions (by default!) cannot be taken away without taking away the privilege to post as well.  In other words, if I cannot view topics in board Z, I cannot post in Z either... because I cannot view it.

Post moderation generally allows (or at least *should allow*) you to do this.  What post moderation is is simple.

If post moderation is enabled, and person A posts... his post is not actually "visible" by anyone yet.  After it has been approved by a moderator (who can see it and any topics in that board) it can be seen by anyone, such as person B.

So, my idea was to use post moderation... this seems to be, roughly, what you want.

Am I wrong?

Now we just have to figure out how post moderation works :P.  I'll see if I can't try the mod and figure it out once I get home today.

[Unknown], you are understanding the situation perfectly.

QuotePerson A comes to your forum.  Person A has a post to make, and posts it.  After posting this, person A can see it, and so can you.  However, person B (who comes along later) cannot see this post person A made, but can make posts for himself.

Yup, that's it!

Thanks for your response!

...just a quick thought...

QuotePerson A comes to your forum.  Person A has a post to make, and posts it.  After posting this, person A can see it, and so can you.  However, person B (who comes along later) cannot see this post person A made, but can make posts for himself.

All of that is true, and since I don't want to assume anything... ;)..., it is also true that person A can correspond with me in the post/thread that he/she created. Same goes for person B. Neither of them, however, can see each other's posts. When and if person A or B decide that I can make the thread available for public viewing, then I will do so.

That's the gist of it.

Looking forward to your reply, and thanks again for your interest and help.

Sincerely,
Dainis

Dainis

Hi all, I broke out the current key issue from this topic and created a new thread.

It's over here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=17831.0

I'll do the same thing when we get to the polling stuff.

That'll avoid all of the plowing necessary to get to any "good stuff" in this thread.

Peace,
Dainis
