At the moment I am using version 1.1.8 of SMF and I would like to upgrade to 2.0 rc1. The forum is hosted by Hostpapa and I have Filezilla as my FTP client.

Am I right in thinking that I have to cut and paste the whole upgrade package from my PC to the public html folder in filezilla and the press the upload button. The navigate to the upgrade php file using my website address with /upgrade.php added at the end, activate the upgrade, then go into my file manager and delete the upgrade php file. Then the site will be on 2.0 rc1?

Is that correct?

Let me start by saying, uninstall ALL mods. Also, return your site to the default theme. Most mods are now made as 2.0 compatible, but you will need to reload after upgrade. Your non-default themes will not be useful after upgrade either, which is why you want to reset to default. Then you can load a new theme after upgrade. With that said:

If you're using FileZilla, you can drag/drop your files. So, open the full 2.0 file on the left side of your screen so that you see all the main folders and files (you should see: attachments, avatars, cache...). Then get your hosted files to the same point on the right side of your screen. So it should (almost) look like mirrors.

For example:

attachments

attachments

avatars

avatars

cache

cache

Then you will want to copy all the files on the left OVER all the files on the right. After upload is complete you will run the upgrade.php

Thanks for the reply, so I copy over attachments, avatars, cache and the rest of the folders plus the PHP files. Do I also copy the SQL files, text documents ?

KahneFan

You copy everything in the upgrade package. EVERYTHING. As for SQL, upgrade.php will take care of the SQL stuff.

Right, gotcha, copy everything. Thanks for the help, I'll let you know how it pans out.

In the end decided to leave it as 1.1.8 untill the full version of 2 is out.

Will we have to do it this way when the official release is out?  ???

I sure hope not as I have 60+ mods installed!  If so, I may just be stuck with 1.1.8 for a long time.  :'(

ManilaGurL

I sure hope not, too, since I have a lot of mods installed as well.

Hope the final release is just like upgrading from 1.1.7 to 1.1.8.

Dragooon

Yes, you will have to do that way when the final release is out. The patching is only available for minor version jumps, beta 1 to beta 2 or RC 1 to RC 2 or RC x to final are considered as major version jumps.

PalmBeachPreps

Bummer!  I guess it's 1.1.8 forever(or a very long time).

Why is this necessary? When upgrading, won't the upgrade make the mods not recognizable? Why should they be uninstalled? I'm not questioning you...just want to know why it is necessary.

Thanks,

Wally

KahneFan

TBH, it's been a while since I upgraded, so maybe someone can confirm that step for me. As for the theme, if you have it set to a custom theme, your site will not recognize that theme... but it WILL recognize the new default theme, which is why you must (at least) reset your site to the default theme.

If you're going to do a Large upgrade, then they'll be automatically uninstalled. Otherwise for small update, then no need anyway.

Thanks everyone...upgrade went fine...I appreciate all the help from you all.
