another idea to improve smf is to allow people to choose how many posts they want to view per page.

I might second that, as for right now only the admin can set the number of posts per page. I think also a good feature would be for the user to set how many topics per page on the board index. That feature isn't available for the members in either vBulletin, Invision, phpBB, Ikonboard or others.

Meaning that they can either have it as forum default, like the time format or choose from the same drop-down menu as in the admin panel. I think both post/page and topics/page should be a drop down menu with options like Default-10-15-20-25-30.

it's a good idea because often isdn-users are bugging me, because for they 100 posts  are a lot to load, the dsl user say, what 100posts only? i want the complete thread on a page. so it would be great to define a limit (because php and mysql can reach some limits, especially on shared servers very fast, which would result in a very slow server, when too many users set it to a too high value) which is the max value a user can set an so everybody can chooose how many topics or posts he can view. But dont think dropdownmenu would be good, a field with just a number would be better because else you would have to enter a lot of possible values, better let the user choose how many he wants to see.

Let the admin decide on a maximum and let the users set the amount they want within those limits
