We are happy to bring you the first Release Candidate of Simple Machines Forum.  We hope this new version is more stable, usable, and generally better than the previous - as we always do.

Some of the major changes made in this release (compared to beta 6) are:
  • Parse errors in templates are displayed better.
  • A preview column has been added to Edit Forum News.
  • Ban center restyled and now includes an interface to view ban logs.
  • Added "Male to Female ratio" and "Users Online Today" to the statistics page.
  • Added avatar management (in Attachment Manager.)
  • Board themes can now override the user configured theme.
  • If new replies are made between reading a thread and replying, a warning message can be displayed.
  • Admins can now change their member's usernames
  • Viewing members from a group now has a new template, with options to easily add and remove members from said group.
  • Option to upload smileys in the smiley center
  • New smiley manager interface, including an easier admin interface and the option of adding a popup window.
  • Cleaner admin interface with easy links to the most used areas.
  • Search has been optimized for faster performance and many new options added to the admin interface for it.
  • It is possible to set default theme settings for all users, and to force settings on members.
  • Addition of database sessions to enable the forum to work correctly on poorly configured servers.
  • Several new options added to the member's "look and layout" section of the profile.
  • When posting a message, any errors generated will not result in the post being lost.
  • The post screen will now warn you if new replies were added whilst making your post.
  • Many package manager improvements. (it almost works properly now!)
  • It is now possible to add as many options to a poll as you wish with javascript.
  • You can limit the amount of attachments that can be added to a post.
  • People can register with a wider variety of characters in there name, plus more internationalization.
Please see the changelog for a (much much) more detailed list.

We would much appreciate it if you would give us constructive feedback on this release, as well as bug reports.  These are two of the things that really help a project grow and strive.

Some changes have been made that require template changes.  For the most part, you should be able to use your old templates... but without these new features.

If you are upgrading from Beta 6, you only need to use the "update" package because it includes just the changed files.  However, if you have any mods installed it would be better to use the "upgrade" package.  Remember that you can use the "upgrade" package to go from any previous version of SMF.  You can also use it to upgrade from YaBB SE.

You can always find information posted here about things like installation, upgrade, and more.  As development continues, you will see more and more tutorials, FAQs, and manuals for SMF - this is just another part of development.

By the way... what are the requirements for SMF? PHP 4.3.0/4.2.0/... ?

Because the Informations given in http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6765.0 aren't 100% true... (SMF runs with PHP 4.1.0, but for everything to work you'll need at least PHP 4.3.0 (i think this should be mentioned - otherwise people probably think you say "4.3" is recommended because of php-security-bugs)) ...uhmm and the zlib-extension should also be mentioned... at least its used in the package-manager....

Perhaps that's why the Installation Guide specifies 4.1.0 as a requirement but 4.3.0 as a recommendation?

;D i already changed my posting, peter... i think it should be mentioned that some things work differently if you're not using PHP>=4.3.0 ... like the missing gd_info or that dumpdatabase works slightly different.... nothing important (i guess it really doesn't make much difference), but i think that could save you troubles if someone installs it on 4.1.0 and it behaves different than expected....

Awesome. Great work all  :)

Hmm... I don't mean to be whiney, but ... the quote tags still don't function properly on my board  :'(

Is there any way to update all the posts somehow so that all the quote tags will be recognized properly?

The symptom is still as described in this post

Tim

upgrade went smooth, thanks for all the hard work to everyone :)

Open phpmyadmin and run the following query (assuming your tables have the smf_ prefix):
UPDATE
   smf_messages
SET
    body = REPLACE(body,'[quote=','[quote author=')
WHERE
   body LIKE '%[quote=%';

[/quote]

I get this instead of a selectable row of smilies on the "post message" screen:

Quote<br /> <b>Notice</b>: Undefined index: description in <b>/blabla/httpd.www/forums/Sources/Load.php(1090) : eval()'d code</b> on line <b>505</b>
