Actually, it wouldn't require much modification at all.  I will work on another blog mode that will allow for multiple blogs.

No pressure here (lol) but do you have any idea when you might get this feature added?  I've been working on my own mutli-user blog customization where each blog owner is the moderator of their own board, but it's lacking many of the features that yours has.  If you were gonna have this done sometime soon, I'd much rather use yours.  Just a rough ETA would be great.  Thanks dude!

I am going to be developing this functionality for my own site anyways, so it'll most likely be about a week or so.

Fantastic!  I'll be on the lookout for it.  :)

I've attached your Post.php that I fixed.  Sorry I forgot one little thing in the blog.xml file.  I'll update the package on the customization site now also.

Great jobs...thanks a lot....great mod, great support  ;D
Look forward for the next development  :D

I am having a totally vacant day...
I cannot find an option where i can post anything to the blog?

I can see catagories and set them, all installed fine, its in the header bar, ive assigned it to a board, but how please, do i post to it?

you can stop laughing now... i feel like stevie wonder when he has a crap jumper day  :P

denzil69

okays..... weve found the blog drop down list on the ordinary post to board routine.
is there anyway that the blog board can be made to look like a blog rather than the normal regular board layout (default setting)?

to the website visitor, it doesnt look like a blog, unless they click on "blog" in the header bar

one more important question...
instead of showing the user name, it shows the log in name!
can this be changed at all do we know?

this same problem occured with the site map mod but was resolved.

ta for the help

Charles Hill

You mean show the user's display name rather than their login name?

Also... To make the board in the display view look like a blog would require a lot of changes to display.template.php.  I don't know if that'd be worth it.  What I am going to be doing for the next version is make blog boards not show up on the board index.  Additionally, I am working on another blog mode that would allow every user to make a blog and set the settings and manage their blog categories via their profile.

May I ask how this mod differs from SMFBlog that already is on this site?

Charles Hill

I've never used SMFBlog... But I can tell you that this mod does pretty much everything most blog software does and more.  I am almost done with the new multiple blogs mode.

Charles Hill

I am pretty much done with all the changes... You can check it out here:

Awesome.  That was quick.  A couple of things I wonder if you could add:

  • On blog index, can you make it show member avatars to the left of the names
  • On blog index, can you make it show # of articles (and # of comments?) instead of total # of posts
  • In your blog, I wasn't allowed to post a comment, will members be able to comment by default?  Or will you need to explicitly set permissions for each blog board?
  • On member profile, can you show a link to the member's blog, if they have one
  • Not sure how you setup new blogs, add/edit categories, etc

These are all little things... overall, it looks great.  When you get the mod packaged up, I'll give it a thorough test.

Edit: One more thing, on the blog index, can you display the blog (board) description below each blog name?  That would be cool.

Thanks for all the good suggestions.  I did already have some of the things you suggested, though you can't really tell:
- Already display avatars to the left of blog names on the blog index.
- Already display blog description on blog index below blog name.

I will definitely add the other things you suggested.

edit-
I'll add permissions for posting replies to each blog board so that all regular members of your forum can post comments.

I'm trying to edit the index.template on my custom mod but it isn't working out. Some of the things I'm supposed to change don't exist like[ban]

hello, this is my first post and my first week using SMF on a production site.  :D
I'm excited to see this mod and I'm intend to use it.
I haven't try it yet but from the demo you've just shown above, it does look really promising and really useful.
so SMF users won't have to bother integrating their sites with wordpress or other blogging platform for a simple blog.

however there is one thing that keeps me a bit annoyed :(
the comment/reply view of the blog post.
does it mean all the comments will always be seen on the frontpage?
is there a link to "Read More" or something that is more like a common blog?  :)

there is also one more request if you don't mind.
I'm currently using "Ultimate Profile" mod, could you perhaps integrate your mod so that it has a link to users' blog?
or maybe a "Recent Blog Posts" link?

regards
wonderful work

Charles Hill

You can choose to disable comments on your blog's display page.  And you can set how long comments can be.  The read more link currently takes you to the display page in that board and it displays the entire topic with all posts just like any other topic would be displayed in your forum.

There are currently multiple links in user's profiles that take you to their blog page.  If you want something more, you'll have to be specific so that I know exactly what you want.

thanks for the mod.

i installed and integrated with no problems.

I've been on the lookout for just the mod like this one Charles!

I've never used SMFBlog (...)
SMFblog is "A (very) simple SMF blogging system" made by Daniel15 some time ago, and the two of you seem to have been using very similar methods, except yours is further developed. Daniel also seem to have dropped all support at the moment, so your blog mod is my best bet for sure right now and an outstanding one at that :)
I was about to ask if you could please please update this mod to work with the 2.0 version of SMF (and that request would of course include your nice drafts-mod as well, hehe), but it seems you have an error that should be sorted out first.

On my first fresh install using WAMP, I got an error after I'd just installed this mod then went to try and post somewhere. The first time I just ignored it and kept on going until I got the mod working, but I did a new fresh install to see if I could reproduce the bug, and i could:
QuoteYou have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ' , , 1, 4, 4,
0, 0, 0, 0)' at line 3
File: C:wampwwwsmf_test1SourcesSubs-Post.php
Line: 1579
Also, that ' , , 1, 4, 4,0, 0, 0, 0)' increases by one every time the error ocurrs (though it started at 4), like on my 6th attempt it would say ' , , 1, 10, 10,0, 0, 0, 0)' (I also don't get where the starter-'(' is at...).
Upon replying to an existing topic, it worked.

Again note: This happened by first installing the mod, applying no additional settings whatsoever but just going straight to whichever board around and attempt to make a new thread. I then went to blog settings and changed Enable Blog => Disable Blog (I thought 'Disable' was the pre-set on my first install, but I don't quite remember...), but the same error ocurred. I then switched to hidden mode, and to my surprise, it now worked! However, I doubt changing to hidden mode was what actually did it... Now, the "Blog" tab was finally showing up in the navigation, though there were no categories of course as I had not added any. Now I could also switch to "Enable Blog" and it would still work. When I switched back to "Disable Blog" however, that is when the bug ocurred again!

Okay, maybe I've been doing some things I didn't know I was doing as well (In all likelyness it did initially say 'Disable Blog'), but it seems the "Disable Blog" is what brakes the threadposting on the forum. Please fix this, then see if you could be so kind as to update this lovely mod to be compatible with 2.0 :)

Oh, and one last thing bothered me about this mod, though I'm guessing there's nothing you can do about it: After I write a reply to a blogpost (in the blog-interface), depending on my "return-settings" I'm either returned to the board index, or to the topic (in forum-view) that I replied to, and any sign of having just written in a blog is just gone :( Is there any way to change this redirect when I'm writing in the blog? so that when replying to a blogpost, you'll remain inside the blog interface, and that good ol' blogger-feeling remains!

Charles Hill

The posting error with Subs-Post.php occurs only when you have the blog installed and disabled.  I have fixed it for v1.08.  I will be adding the redirects back to the blog after you post comments (replies) and new topics in that blog for 1.08 also.

As for making this mod compatible with 2.0... I am holding off on making mods for 2.0 until its final release.
