Thank You all, having been here since the first Betas. I am amazed to see how far it has come.

The word is very much appreciated thank you all for the amazing work.

i'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.  i currently run SMF 1.1.21.  can upgrade straight from this to smf 2.1 rc1?

landyvlad

Heck no

There will be some incremental upgrades read due to changes in php version requirements among other reasons

Actually, the upgrader is designed to be able to upgrade from any version since YaBB SE 1.5.5 (inclusive). Development releases not included, and upgrades from Betas aren't guaranteed either.

It's why the upgrade package includes upgrade_1-0.sql, upgrade_1-1.sql etc... the upgrader upgrades through each SQL file sequentially effectively doing the incremental upgrades all at once one after the other automatically.

There may be PHP or MySQL upgrades that'll need to be done otherwise depending on your server though. So if you plan on upgrading, backup first.

Also, all mods and themes you have on 1.1.21 will break and will need replacing.

Finally, as always, this announcement topic is not for support. Discussion and support for SMF 2.1 can be found in the SMF 2.1 support board.

Well, there was one who had a whip, but that's a very long time ago.
Who was that?

Arantor

I think at this stage we will merely refer to her as She Who Must Not Be Named.

Gwenwyfar

Well, breaking it down to "she" already narrows down the options quite a bit

This thread is looking better suited to Chit Chat right now. It's no longer looking appropriate for "News and Updates".

Arantor

Maybe, but I also think it's nice to have a place to let people (visibly) see that in the aftermath of an RC, people are having fun - and positive, relaxed and happy people tend to be more productive at fixing problems.

Besides, what forum (other than Discourse based ones*) doesn't actively have topic derailing going on?

* Because Jeff says that topics must ALWAYS STAY ON TOPIC. ALWAYS. And Jeff is wrong, that's not how people communicate. Don't be like Jeff.

Gwenwyfar

Hear hear.

Also, what if we are on a timeline displacement where the release of RC1 depends directly on the existence of whips?!

I hate Discourse. Horrible bloody thing. :P

Discussing the next version of SMF and release date is like having a political debate about Brexit. More chance of winning the lottery than guessing the release year.
Wonder if I will still be around to see the next release!  :P
Come to think of it... like Brexit, it may never happen.

I suspect RC2 will happen sooner rather than later. But sure, talk it down rather than actually being supportive of people doing things in their free time for your benefit.

If someone is impatient they can always pay close to 200 bucks for one of those bloated piece of crap for excuse forums.

Arantor

I dunno, I wouldn't call XenForo bloated but there are things I can do in SMF that are... difficult in XF (and yes, I have a licence)

That was very endearing, thank you. I'm having a great day.

Unlike Brexit, SMF isn't leaving a Union.

Antechinus

Not entirely sure the UK is either. They can't seem to make their minds up. :D
However, I'm sure SMF 2.1 will be by far the greater success.
