QuoteI hear you, but if you want a mod that adds core functions, well, it will mod core files... a bit of a catch-22

Not necessarily, PHP Nuke manages to achieve such simply by dumping a directory into the Blocks folder - including pretty sophisticated modifications and integrations with other PHP applications.

PHP Nuke also manages to be a security hole out of the box usually.

As long as the package doesn't give warnings, i.e. it says "Test Successfull", then it's perfectly safe to install, I happily apply mods etc with over 1000 users online.

I have a large board thats very popular, around 15 new signups per day at the moment (www.ClubCalibra.com) and any downtime is detrimental to the growth of the site.

I only get about 40 registrations a day now and don't consider mine to be all that big. 2 hours of downtime to upgrade couldn't cost you more than 1-2 registrations if you time it right. Check your stats and see when your least popular time is...than go from there.

Perhaps...but at least their modifications don't modify the core system files. I'm just suggesting that its a nice way to do it, perhaps you'll ignore the feedback but thats all it is, feedback and constructive crit.

tried downloadin the update but everytime i do n try to open it it says:-

archive is unknown format or damaged!!!

not had this problem with anythin else, any ideas?

The team is working on ways which would reduce core source file modifications, so in the DE it might be a little different. But already there are many hooks, but few people use them.

Ok,

thanx, It would be enough if the captcha image was bigger, so one could better read it (the phpBB one is much bigger for example).

Will I be able to update from RC2 to RC3 even though I have 60+ mods installed?

Its kinda of impossible, you'd need to wait for the mods to update to SMF 1.1 RC3 or just try using the override :P

You'll be able to upgrade, but it will loose your mods of course.

two problems (1.1RC3), first related to database collations - in upgrade.php there is SET NAMES but in index.php still i've needed to add them manually just to use 1251 with mysql server wiht UTF8 default (and 1251 database).

second, the code in spell checking is still the same, i've started a thread about it:
