I want to create a portal.

I know similar topics allready existed, but I'm an idiot when it comes to this...

I want to create a portal for my SMF-board. But I don't know how.
And how exactly does it work - do I have to change the allready existing board in some way?
Or do I just have to install a portal and that's it?

I found out there is many different portals - like Mambo.

but how exactly do I install it and make it work with my forum?
in which directory on my server do I have to put the mambo files?

Can someone give me a "step-by-step" guide...
