gifs in /Sources/*

Why is there so many gifs defined in Sources? should not the template be able to choose self?

Movement away from this would probably be a good thing, but in most cases you can show your own graphics by using the relevant contextual data.

If there's a case where that is not true, we'd very much like to know.
