I have a load of files in my board root directory name "core.xxxx" e.g. core.13187, core.12556, core.12715 etc. Could someone enlighten me as to what these are please?

Thanks

That's honestly not a good sign for your host nor  you, in all honesty.

It can mean several things...

1.) HD Failure on the server
2.) Memory Failure on the server
3.) CPU overheating and/or failure

I would get ahold of your host and and inform them that you are seeing this on your sites root folder.

If they are aware of it, you should ask to have your site moved to another server that is stable.

Either way, you might want to move your site to another server just to ensure that you do not have any issues, especially if that particular server crashes entirely.

I spoke to my hosting provider and they suggested they were being generated by index.php in my board folder. They have removed them for me, but I am a bit concerned why they were being generated??

swtdivalove

There is no reason whatsoever for the index.php to be generating anything like that.

Who is your host?

Core dumps usually means that there is something wrong with hardware.

Request your site be moved to another server.

HostGator and they have been very good for the last year or so since I have been with them.

swtdivalove

They may be a good host, but it still does not stop servers from crashing. :)

True, but I thought their support would be better if their servers are really having problems. There is no way this would be caused by the forum software no?

quiz_modder

They are suggesting it could be caused by the database? They will be looking into it further apparently.

quiz_modder

OK, got some further information on this. Here are some of the messages they have provided me

Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.
#0  0x080b3c3c in match (eptr=Cannot access memory at address 0xbf341e84

583     if (md->match_call_count++ >= md->match_limit) RRETURN(PCRE_ERROR_MATCHLIMIT);

They are suggesting the core dumps were generated from PHP when it was attempting to load the index.php script and it was running out of memory. I have been testing out a mod so I am now thinking that there might be something in that mod that could be causing this? Perhaps I may have missed out a freeing up of the db resources in one of the functions somewhere. Could something like that cause the above?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

quiz_modder

Not getting any further with this, anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks

SlammedDime

What mod were you testing out??

PCRE is used for regular expressions.  There aren't any in SMF that should cause a seg fault.

My own mod, which doesn't use regular expressions anywhere. Unless this could be coming from another mod I have installed.

I have disabled numerous mods but still getting core dumps. Does anyone have any bright suggestions for other things I could try to work out what is going wrong here? I am at a loss  :(

As you can see, quite a few. I have gone through a lot of these and disabled for a day or so until the core dump appears again.

So core dumps can be created by bad PHP code then? Is there anything that can be done to try and narrow it down more? Things that I can look for in code that are often then cause, etc?

The big problem I have at the moment is the lack of detail to work with so I am stabbing in the dark a little.

Thanks

riker

This has happened to me on two different hosts now and I've read about it more and more here too.  I'm begining to think it could really be a problem with SMF 2 itself rather than the server

SlammedDime

If it were a problem with 2.0 itself in base form, more and more people would have problems with it... I've been running 2.0 on two different test environments with two different server configurations with no problems with core dumps.

m4tthall - My suggestion at this point would be to take a backup of all of your files, then upload a fresh copy of the Beta 4 files to your site and let it run for a few days.  If a core dump doesn't occur, start installing one mod at a time, and let it run for a few days before installing the next and see when the core dump occurs.

Is there any way I can upload a new set of files into a new folder, but point these to the existing database, then switch over?

I don't suppose RC1 is available either is it?

SlammedDime

Yes, and no and no.

You can upload a copy of SMF files to a seperate folder, and copy Settings.php to that folder, and adjust the urls and paths in the Settings.php file to reflect the change.

As for RC1 - not available yet.

Just came across this, could it be related? http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Mail/Message/php-dev/3653709

I created a file with the following code

preg_match("/http:\/\/(.)+\.ru/i", str_repeat("http://google.ru",2000));

I executed it on my server and a core dump was generated. So, could someone explain what that code is doing above and whether there is anything in SMF that could do something similar please?

Cheers

SlammedDime

Can you zip or tar all of your source files and email them to me at [email protected].  I'm leading to think the problem is coming from the db_query function, one of the regular expressions that parses the query info before the query is done.

In your specific case tho, or at least what you posted above, the query seems to be coming from the writeLog function that writes to the database when/where people are online on your board, at least on a default install.

Email sent, thanks.

SlammedDime

Ok, based on the above and tracing the code a bit more, it would appear that the log_error function is doing an insert query, and the preg_match that happens in the db_replacement__callback function is causing the core dump, at least from what I can tell.  There is only one preg_match from when that db_insert function is called until it returns in the callback function.

Let's try some testing... if you can disable error logging on your board for a short time and see if the core dumps stop, then re-enable it and see if they come back... see if we can narrow this down.

Does your forum encounter a lot of errors?

What it boils down to, though, is that in a properly configured host, a preg_match wouldn't cause a core dump, preg_match would return a value, even false.  We might be able to try bumping up the memory that SMF is using during execution.  Can you post a phpinfo file as well?  What is a phpinfo() file?

I have sent you the PHP Info file. I won't pretend I know exactly what you meant in your reply though  ;)

How do you turn off the error logging?

Thanks again

SlammedDime

Under configuration > Security and moderation > General tab.  There is the option for disabling error logging.

Looks like the memory allowed for php scripts is okay on your host (that's what I needed the phpinfo page for)

OK, turned off error logging, so will get back to you on whether I get any core dumps over the next day or so.

By the way, one error I was getting consistently in there was the following:

8: Undefined index: description
File: /public_html/board/Themes/default/GenericMenu.template.php
Line: 280

I am pretty sure this is related to a mod I had worked on, I just think I didn't set something for the admin tabs properly, as it happens on any navigation on the admin pages it has. Do you happen to know what I could check to see where the missing setting is please?

Thanks again

quiz_modder

Just to let you know I haven't had any core dumps today, so it may be related to error logging. Anyway, I will continue for another day or two with it off before enabling it again.

metallica48423

let us know if thats the case.

I have also had this problem with the AEVAC mod in the past when it was using callbacks.  Is it possible we've found a PHP bug?

Had a few now unfortunately, so I am still baffled as to what is causing it :(

I will try and go through the core dumps later and post any findings.

Told you it was happening more and more on SMF 2 so it can't all be blamed on the servers!

metallica48423

I don't have anything saying it is SMF causing it though.  I do have an entire site and other scripts ;)  These dumps didn't have any information pertaining to the script which caused them.  I've made a change though and checking to see if any more occur.  Then if so i can run gdb on them.

When it last happened to me the errors were pointing to SMF2 files,

I remember reading somewhere, while debugging this problem with the AEVAC mod, something about a php bug in callbacks causing apache to segfault and coredump.  I can't seem to find it though.  It may even be certain configurations and versions, which makes it even more difficult to track down and kill

I may try to update PHP and see what that achieves, but i'd like to see what else SlammedDime knows, if anything :)

Well the core dump itself is pointing back to a php file (pcre originally), so I dont think this is an apache problem.  It may be a regular expression that happens to be trampling on a PHP bug, or it may have found one.

metallica & riker: if you can get your host to process the core files, or at least a few of them, and give you the output, then perhaps we can see if these are related.

Did anyone look into this further? Is there anything else you want me to check? I am still getting quite regular core dumps.

SlammedDime

We're still waiting for justin to get another core dump to see if it's similar.  I haven't had any on my live site or my test sites using a combination of 1.1.7 or 2.0B4 or 2.0RC1 and a combination of PHP versions.  I do have to wonder if it's something to do with PHP 5.2.8 though.

I have had ZERO core dumps since i installed the latest beta of the AEVAC mod, which leads me to believe that the mod was still causing it prior to the upgrade.

I am running 5.2.6.  I can upgrade my php version tomorrow if you'd like, to see if they happen then

Is there anything else I can do that would provide any clues?

Thanks

Really weird thing is that these core dumps suddenly stopped without me making any changes about 2 weeks ago. Now today I suddenly got three more even though I haven't made any changes again.  :(

SlammedDime

You could ask your host if they've made ANY server changes to PHP and Apache in the last 3 weeks.

Just did and they (Hostgator) replied with the following

"There have been some changes with PCRE in the more recent versions of PHP, and it appears that your forum is creating core dumps when using some of the functions.  I would check to see if there are any recent updates to your forum software to address this, or any suggestions from the support for the software that you are using.  If you have any more questions, or need more information, please let us know."

m4tthall, was this issue resolved? Are you still getting any core dump files?

Yes, I am still getting core dumps. I am resigned to the fact that I just need to keep removing them for the moment, as I have run out of ideas.

This happened to me before and eventually after constant pestering, they figured out that it was indeed some PHP/Apache problem. They had to recompile them to fix the problem.

I got in contact with them once again and their response was:

"Can you ask them if the forum is updated to work with the new version of PHP and the update to PCRE functions. Since you are on shared server we would not be able to downgrade this for you. "

assuming yo9u are speaking of php5,  yes, smf is 100% php5 compatible

#56
I moved my site to a new hosting and had the same issues after moving. The former hosting had 777 permissions and the new had 755...don't know if that is related or not.

They told me it was something with Tinyportal that was causing it. TP has worked on the other server without a problem so it should have worked on the new one. since my hosting was unable to help and was blaming TP, my solution was to upload the smf upgrade for my version (was 1.1.5 or 1.1.6 at the time) and reinstall my mods. I haven't had the problem since and am with the same hosting.

So, I doubt it is a SMf 2 issue alone. I've also seen this on other hosting services while helping others but never knew why or how it happened. I hope that helps.

S_M_F_Modding, any update on this issue? Maybe try the suggestion by Skhilled (make a backup first).

I upgraded to RC1 two days ago and have not had a core dump since. Fingers crossed this has resolved the issue, but I will keep you posted.

Thanks
