I would say that this is the best alternative to vBulletin, it does the same things (or so far as I know) and it has WWAAAAYY more mods than phpBB (I used to be)

Couldn't agree more.

What little features SMF doesn't have per default or with the use of mods, but vBulletin does, is not worth paying near 200 bucks for in my opinion.

KensonPlays

Completely agree with you Caelum...!

I like how there are a TON of mods, it is free (does basicly everything vBulletin does) and the support is awesome!

I'll be a member here for a while!

Never used vBulletin but now I do not need vBulletin. SMF is something I have looked at for some years as I always wanted to place a forum on my site. Once I got my head around being a webmaster I started looking for software that would do the job. After a year I looked at SMF. I uploaded and installed it on my site to try. I have never looked back.

Actually, I feel guilty that I am using such great software from such great minds for free. There are so many mods and such a great, and stable, basic software that I am amazed. I wish I knew enough to contribute so as to give back. Any suggestions for a real novice at php and mysql?

I am just a photographer, not a programmer. I would help if I knew how.

You'll need to contact your bank or look on a set of blank checks for that information. If you cannot sign up to paypal, contact the team, as I believe they have an alternate method for payment.

If it is anything like the UK, you're not actually allowed to have a paypal account until you're 18.

I don't think it's the best alternative to vB, I think it is better.

They need to move the menubar from code to settings >_>

When they do that I'll agree :-p

I second this. Vb is way too bloated now.

I am not sure I quite understood what you meant by that. Can you elaborate a bit further please?

Vekseid

At the top of the theme you see the menubar:

    * Home
    * Help
    * Search
    * Profile
          o Summary
          o Account Settings
          o Forum Profile
    * My Messages
          o Read your messages
          o Send a message
    * Calendar
    * Members
          o View the memberlist
          o Search For Members
    * Logout

It's 'hard coded' - in the theme in 1.1 and in the core code in 2.0. It really, really belongs in settings.

Better yet would be if someone created a mod to manage it all, IMHO. But that's a different discussion and doesn't really belong here.

Where is a good mod making tutorial?

Look in the SMF Coding forum. Or look at the package SDK.
