aw06: I really really do not see the devs adding this as a core feature, knowing how hard it was to argue some of the other things that were discussed.

Classic case in point: the Coding Discussion board. Almost every one of the stickies in there is routinely ignored, most importantly the one about 'how to help us help you'. If people actually bothered to read it and follow its advice, they'd get help WAY quicker.

You are slightly missing the point of a 'Global Sticky' more so when to use a 'Global Sticky' regular stickies i admit are blind to many, more so on support forums, people tend to make post seeking quick and immediate one on one answers, and we all fall victim to that be it now or in the past.

A Global Sticky will sit as you know on top of regular stickies, these will not necessarily be How TOs, Disclaimers, Read here first or guideline post, those can be stickies in dedicated boards, in my case i use to use Global Stickies to announce Linkups, Must See Breaking News, Upgrade Notices, etc etc, stuff like that .. now for a given month I'd put up 1-4 Global Sticky, and once up they were highly visible and widely viewed by all, the reason why people tend to be blind to regular stickies is mainly because they sit in the same position and don't change.. people will more click on new topics or topics that keep moving to top, So if your in a board and see no sticky and then one day you log in and see a sticky chances are you will click it. few days later sticky is gone, repeat process..

I'm not missing it at all. I've seen on other forums and it's been just as ignored as regular stickies. Been using forums WAY too long...

kat

When Arantor mentioned "News", I feel sure he meant the Newsletter/announcement thingummy.

That's just the same as making a global pronouncement, surely?

Once again, boils down to type of forum and users on-board 8)

Sending out news when you have lots or users is not something i like to do regularly , emails bounce, people don't check emails, global Stickies target active day to day users who log on everyday

kat

And they can't do the same with global announcements?

Arantor

No, I meant the news feature. That displays the announcement on every page, just like a global sticky would.

Guess it depends how intelligent your users are really. Most forum users I've ever known would ignore most sticky/announce things because they don't care.

I've come across a few users who have a fear of stickied topics because they look 'too official'. Nothing stranger than folk!

If you are just starting out, you can go on SMF 2.0 RC2 but do not install any mods. Just a simple forum might do if you are just getting new members. Once final SMF 2 comes out, you can start with the mods and the themes.

why not just intall a plain rc2 forum just to test the features out then upgrade to rc3 as this will run smoothly in a simple install then mod it

calvinhobbes

Haha...i used to do that..mod the crap outta any cms ...but then i realised many mods die out , are not supported in the next version etc. On a commercial site with a lot of users that can be disastrous...so I resist modding my site or go only for paid mods.

On my site i am only usine Aeva and Pretty Url's ...they seem have good support.

I am using RC2 with custom theme (Black Box by Crip) and everything works fine.
The only mod which gives me trouble is Simple SEF but i guess with proper support i will solve all the problems. SMF 2 is great, i wouldn't return to SMF1 anymore....
