Enhanced Custom Help Pages 1.0 Beta 1 Build 0.8.2a
By Nascar
(For SMF 2.0 RC1 and SMF 1.1.x)

Introduction
Well, we all know how helpfull the SMF helppages can be.
But, what if we install a big mod creating a huge new forumfunction?
The users won't have a clue on how thing work on this new place.
You can change this  now.

Using this modification you can add up to 10 new helppages and choose which of the default SMF pages to be used.
You can choose the name and content of each new page, and use both HTML and BBC in them.
In addition, you can add up to 5 side blocks displayed to the left of the helppages, right under the custom helpmenu.

Note that this is a early beta version of this mod and that constant updates will occur.
Also note that that this mod is very simply coded, and won't have unlimited pages etc before I have learned more.

Features
Admin Panel
o Enable/disable the help page
o Choose title of the Help button in the navigation menu
o Create up to 10 help pages whit custom names and HTML content.
o Disable/Enable each custom page as you like
o Add up to 5 HTML blocks at the left side of the helppages.
o Disable/Enable each block as you like
o Choose which of the default SMF helppages to use along whit your custom ones.

Preview
See the attached images for a preview.

Tested
Fully tested on a fresh installation of SMF 2.0 RC1.
The codes of the 1.1.x version was also tested, but not the installation package.

Tinyportal users
Try this (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=270529.msg1846132#msg1846132) if you want to have a link to the TP helppages among the new ones.

Thank you Nascar  :D

My Dream has come true, i have been dying for a mod like this, this mod will rock!!! now i can make custom help pages that relates to my forum only and information i put in will be true and not inaccurate. As i have made so many changes to my site alot of information is no longer accurate, this mod solves that by allowing us to make our own help pages, also it gives such great ability to better the help section. At the moment the layout is poor, again this mod solves that by making things easier to find and understand.

All i can say is you rock, the mod will definately rock and WOW!

Am going to install now,  :D

I am like a kid wih a new toy, can't wait to install quick enough, let me of course backup first ;) then i will let you know how it goes on SMF 1.1.6

Kindest Regards,
Mathew

Hi Nascar,

It failed on index.template.php and modsettings.php. Only reason for this was thou because i have a heavy modded site and had to add code manually using package parser. This was not a problem.

Silly question, where is the section in admin for edit of help pages ??? i cannot find it anywhere, i am using SMF 1.1.6 as you know.

Thank you,
Mathew

Well it is perfect no problems with SMF 1.1.6, two failures but if your site is heavily modded then manual edit maybe required.

I have tried it and no errors or problems at all, I LOVE IT I have used 9 help pages already just got to add content to them now,

If people wants to see how this really does work, visit my help section, at the time of writing this i have not added content only the pages i have enabled and created my own titles, so dont expect perfection, but keep checking back if you want and you will see over time it will look perfect, thanks to Nascar ;)

http://www.foreverlastingfriends.com/index.php?action=help

All i need to do is remove the drop down menu from the help page.

PERFECT! ,

Thanks
Mathew

Glad you like it.
As you may see, the table whit information is pushed a bit to the right, even thou you have no blocks. That's one of the thing I'll fix before I submit this as a mod.

Well i am going like mad,

I have created a contact us page and created a contact us form which checks and validates information has been entered and redirects user to forum once submitted form. If information is not entered then they are told they need to enter information etc.

I Love it :)

I am not bothering to update as happy with it, will update when more features become available.

I am loving it, my help section is exactly how i want it http://www.foreverlastingfriends.com/index.php?action=help

I also changed the links on the drop down menu so i could keep the drop down menu for the help button.

What you think Nascar ??? you should be proud of this mod  :D ,

Like i said before if anyone wants to see what the fantastic things this mod can do check out my help section on above link.

Title: Re: [BETA] Enhanced Custom Help Pages 1.0 Beta 0.5.2
Post by: niko on October 29, 2008, 06:57:43 PM
Good idea but...

It would be better to create custom table for help pages to allow unlimited number of pages, this would also make code better since you would need only one code for all pages.

Maybe this could be done with loops also, one disadvantage is that all pages will be in memory every page load and with more pages it could go over limit sometimes. (depends on limit that server has)

Yes, Niko, I was thinking about updating it like that.
Currently I'm making users able to comment each help page (only admin can see the comments).

basically you need to install via package manager as normal, all it does it skip the file, then manually add the code to the index.template.php file. Go to mod link , select your smf version and it will tell you what to do for the index.template.php file.

Or alternatively upload your index.template.php file.

Nice feature for the help page

But is really important to have unlimited number of pages

Also you can add a little ticket system

Yes much better now and better for users who use small resolutions,

fixes the problem with small resolutions when links on top go underneath each other and more organized on left hand side :)

Can you tell me where my code is off in this Help.template.php file please, it skipped the file on install and my manual install of the code is not correct.
It shows this error when trying to access the new help page.

In This Post (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=270529.msg1769250#msg1769250) genieuk give a link to his help pages where he has included parts of the default SMF help page... is there an easy way to do this or must the pages be copied/coded manually?

Also, a Feature Request:
Is it possible to include the entire SMF default help under one tab or link?
And if it is could the TinyPortal help pages be included in the same manner?

Thanks for this great Mod Nascar.  :)

Maybe I could include feature like that :)

when I try to use package manager the page just returns to the "packages" page instead of loading the mod

I reinstalled 1.1.6, added ECHP then updated to 1.1.7 and it was OK.
just as a check i did it again with 2.2.7 in the first place and it wouldn't install ?

I tried it on my test board.

I do have some suggestions - hopefully these are in the works before submission-

Nonetheless- this one is looking good- Looking forward to seeing it on the Mod Page!

I suggest spending your time on a different mod, unless you are planning to add some different features to this. ;)

Nascar, I have a request/suggestion for a slightly different approach for your Mod.

First of all let me restate my high praise for your work, this is a great add-on for the SMF help pages and I'm sure your final version is going to be well received.  :)

My suggestion may be out of line with your current focus and I'm no coder so this may not work as envisioned but heres my thought... FWIW.

The current SMF help pages are good to have as part of anyones forum so it's good that you are working to include them in your next release, but imho it might work well if you do it the other way around... in other words, have your mod be an add on for the existing SMF help pages much the way that Bloc has done for the TinyPortal help pages.
By adding an extra tab (or tabs) to the SMF help page and then having sub-pages available for each tab page you would accomplish your goal while leaving the SMF page intact.

Thanks... Ken.

As you know I was cancelnig this mod, but after the comments I got from a few people I decided to keep working on it.

1.0 Beta 1 Build 0.7d 19 December 2008
o You can now add 5 blocks instead of 3.
o Added swedish translation.
o Removed brazilian translation, as Costa (the translator) has left SMF due to real life issues.
o Added a feature allowing you to keep the SMF default helppages as they are. You can also disable any of them if you don't want it.

Note
1.1.x users
Only the old versions of this mod is currently available for SMF 1.1.x.
This is due to the lack of time I have to code this mod, so I find it easier to finnish the mod for SMF 2.0 and then convert it for 1.1.x.

I'm trying to install too my test forum (http://www.ourfamilyforum.org/tptest2/index.php) that also has the TinyPortal help pages installed.

During the install process the help.php and help.template.php files both failed so those two received a manual edit but there is a conflict and so far I'm not getting it sorted out, here's the error that it throws when the help page is accessed.

Did you use the latest version of this mod? Its only for SMF 2.0. You need to use the archived release of the mod (at the bottom of the first post in this topic)
If so, you might want to wait a few days for me to update 0.7d to 0.8a which will support SMF 1.1.7 again (1.1.x versions will always be a bit late)

http://www.ourfamilyforum.org/SMF2.0/index.php?action=help (http://www.ourfamilyforum.org/SMF2.0/index.php?action=help)

It will take a little rework on my article code to get the display correct, but this is going to work nice.

Will there be some way to deal with the TinyPortal help pages being installed to the SMF help pages for those of us who use TP?

Update
1. The SMF 1.1.x version for this mod is located at the bottom of the first post of this topic. Do not use the ECHP 1.0 Beta 1 Build 0.7d.zip package for 1.1.x.
2. Be aware that the 1.1.x version doesn't have a proper admin panel. Instead, all settings are gathered in one big page.
3. You might want to know that the 1.1.x version never where tested.

Tried it on my SMF 1.1.7 and the test failed on:
./Sources/Help.php
./Themes/default/Help.template.php

I tried uninstalling TinyPortal to see if that would help but it gave the same result.

Finally got it to install to my SMF 1.1.7 by doing a manual install... on my other attempt one of the file edits must have been missed.

At this point, with the current version it looks as if the only way to install is to do it manually if TinyPortal is to be used as well.

Oh Im so doing a happy dance today
The TP tab would be the one thing I would like to so go. I LOVE TP and the tab explains the functions but at least the members I have had experience with dont know what TP is - its just a website to them. But then again, the members on my site go into a panic and and think its difficult to post pictures even though there is an image there and its there photobucket account that is causing it.

It's untested, but if the regular none-TP 1.1.x package works, this one will to.

That works. :)

Did an uninstall of the previous version and installed this new .v through the package manager with no problems at all.
The TinyPortal help pages link shows up in the navigation and works as expected.

A couple of notes:
When in the TP help pages the SMF tab shows along with the TP tab... if you click on the SMF tab it redirects to the ECHP 'main' page.
About three pages of errors show up in the error log, but those should likely be disregarded until you release a version with an admin panel.

Works good as is, but the 2.0 style admin panel will be nice to have. ;)

Making the TP help pages look liek the ECHP's would require to rewrite the TP helppages, which is not really want I itend to do whit this mod.

Are all errors the same? Which one?

One note for those of us that have TinyPortal and SMF 1.1.7 installed:
Found that in my case it worked best to replace 'Help.php' and 'Help.Template.php' with fresh SMF default copies of those two files before installing the currently available versions of ECHP.

Me not into coding so this may be wrong, but it sounds like your install routine needs to overwrite those two files entirely so as to remove all of the TinyPortal entries in the two.

No ,I don't think so.
I just have to take a look at some fresh TP help files and adjust my installpackage to those.

Anyway, I just finished 1.0 Beta 1 Build 0.8 and I'm ready to release it after I've tested the 1.1.x version.
Then I have to fix the TP version to, of course.

ECHP 1.0 Beta 1 Build 0.8h (1.1.x and TinyPortal).zip

On this one the install fails as follows:
With TinyPortal installed the file test fails for Help.php and Help.Template.php
With TP uninstalled it fails on Help.Template.php

On a manual install it fails to find this part in the code of the Help.Template.php file:
                <operation>

Hmm..
Can't see why it doesn't find that.
that part is not necessary if you do not wish to use the search-helppage.

Could you by any chanse attach two fresh copies of Help.php and Help.temaplte.php, whit TP installed?

Ok, after testing this, I've got a few things.

-The "Color of current menuitem" feature doesn't take different themes into consideration. Should give option to disable or use bold/italics/underline instead.

-Your preview images show a space between Page 10 and the General Help page. The current build does not include that. I'd suggest including the ability to accept user input for the divider, such as a <hr /> or <br /> or even a block of text.

-What's the purposes of the blocks? I would suggest allowing dynamic blocks for each page.

-Capped at 10 pages? Are you going to allow the user, eventually, to set up unlimited pages?

-Same as above, but for blocks.

-Title of help pages in menubar doesn't allow for translations. Something to think about, since the default SMF text does get translated.

-Give the ability to choose between an introductory text on the main help page, or to select one of the enabled pages (both the mod's or SMF's defaults) to show.

Hope that helps you, Nascar. BTW, it fails on RC1's Help.php source, so be prepared for a change once SMF RC 1 gets released.

Good idea. I'll have a look at that.

It's becasue of all pages being in the same array. Maybe I could have the 10 custom pages in 1 array and the default in one.
Then I could separate the output of each of them.

They where added to allow you to have blocks like "New to our forum? Check out this board" etc.
Dynamic blocks is another good idea

Yes, I will. I just have to learn more first.
Same for blocks

That installed with no problems at all.

Wish list item:
In the SMF 2.0 version the SMF help is separated from the  Enhanced pages and has  its own heading, "SMF User Help" It would be nice to have that in this SMF 1.1.7 version, plus being able to change the heading text would be nice as well.

Everything seems to work correctly within the pages and the controls, but there are lots of errors thrown in the error log; here's a few of them:

Glad it worked.

The header disappeared when I started to use foreach whit the all_pages array.
I could add the echpages in to one array and the deafult into one, and this would fix it.

I'll have a look at all these errors.

Very small update

Changelog
o Just removed a unneeded variable. It won't affect the looks of the mod in action. (Don't ask me why I've put it there anyway)
o Added a few comments in the template file, find them and be suprised :P

Note
I'm seeking someone who's interested in testing the final build of Beta 1, which has been started working on.

The parser in my above post? Yes, it should if you choose version 1.1.3 in the selectbox.
