Very nice, Ant, very nice indeed.
Yes, endeed. That should be default in Curve.

:P
Well Blocs idea came after yours ;)

Its not enough markup to add 2 background images. :)
you could give div.quote a display: list-item; style, and then define an open quote as the bullet ;)

Just for the hell of it (someone had to try it) I set them up with all four corners rounded. I have the css set up so I can switch between all three options easily for comparison. The full rounded quotes can be done with no extra images (the required bits can be added as part of the existing sprites) and the css isn't very complex.

After comparing them I think they are much better than the half rounded quotes (which I didn't expect). I think they are worth considering, at least as an option for people who want them. Screenshots attached (taken with two browsers side by side at 800 res).

I'm with you on that Ant, fully rounded quotes definitely look the best out of these.  Just hoping that SMF decided to go with it and this will fully complete the new RC2 curve look and feel.

Cheers :)

If they don't I'll do it as a mod. ;) The coding is already done anyway, and it doesn't interfere with any other styling so you can still have the square box look to suit other themes just with css changes.

Forgive me :) , 1 - 2 - 3 number of images :)

Top means ( Home - Community - Customize ... ) Bottom Means ( Reply , Print , Sent Friend ... )

i think problem is about buttons :P

Antechinus

That's different. It doesn't happen with English (or at least not on my pc).

Owdy

That 4 rounded looks real nice too.

Okai..if you want to go with full 4 cornered curves regardless - which IMO is really the only option if you gonna use round quotes at all, half-round look slightly "chopped up" - would you at least drop that gradient..? IMHO it doesn't really give the proper 3d effect. If you're after the same as the main frame that is, in which case I suggest something similar to below.

In any case, I still think its better to use square/colors-only for the quotes.

I like the gradient (works for me) but that's a trivial issue as I imagine everyone will be tweaking their own images anyway. The defaults could even be made completely flat colour. The main thing from my point of view is to have the ability to style them up (since a lot of people seem to want that) without having to hack Subs.php.

IOW, if we build the hooks in then the default Curve can be styled in any number of ways, and even beginners will be able to customise their themes to suit themselves by adjusting the css and images.

In any case, I still disagree about the square quotes. :D To me it's rather like trying to jam a brick up Salma Hayek's bottom. It's a lovely, smooth and rounded shape and trying to shove a brick up it just isn't right. If I saw anyone attempting that I would feel compelled to try and stop them.

ETA: And no, I wasn't trying to imitate the main frame with the gradient. I was trying something else, if you look closer at the screenshots. ;)

I'm with Bloc!!

Anyway we can set up an option to switch from rounded to squared quotes! What do you think?

Alrighty then. Salma Hayek's bottom, eh? No, wouldn't attempt anything like that lmao. ;D

lorenzone92, having a styling switch in admin would be over the top. That isn't going to happen. Really I don't mind too much how Curve is styled in default form as long as it is coded to give options. That is the whole rationale behind a lot of its coding anyway. It seems to me that since so many people seem to like the rounded quotes then building in some styling options makes sense.

Now, while we aren't going to provide a switch in admin what we can do is give people the css for various options so they can edit it in themselves. It would even be possible to have three or four different quote styles in index.css with only one of them not commented out. That is how my test site is running at the moment. I just comment out different styles when I want to run comparisons. So I did those comparison screenshots by running one code, then commenting it out and un-commenting a second code and refreshing one of the browsers but not the other then repeat, etc.

Probably we wont actually supply a stack of codes in the default file, but we can have pre-made css snippets that people can just copy/ paste over whatever is in the default file. That is easy. In fact we already have several of them written as a result of this battle. :D

As promised we are providing code for both styles of quotes. The Tips and Tricks topic is here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=347845.0

The further style wasn't directly adopted for RC2 public (nor do I personally think it will be, but I could well be wrong), however, there is documentation on how to do it readily enough in http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=347845.0
