When I go into my cPanel I don't see SMF, just YaBBSE.

Your host probably hasn't upgraded yet.

I just installed SMF thru Fantastico and it went smoothly. However, when I try to upgrade it by using the link provided in SMF this error comes up: 2: fopen(): SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 32030 is not allowed to access /home/sprinqle/public_html/ob/Packages/temp owned by uid 99   What should I do? This error also occurs when I try to install mods...  Please help. Thanks very much@!

Turn off php's safe mode, if you don't control your server then your server's sysadmin will need to do it.

cheaca

wait, how do you turn if offf? thanks for replying to my query... ;)

David

That is more likely a permission that is not set correctly.  You can fix this via your FTP client.  SMF works fine with safe mode enabled.
This space for rent.

The package manager, however, does not unless PHP suExec is used at the same time.

I installed smf through fantastico. I do however prefer to use the installers that the software provides because it is much nicer looking than text boxes on a white background. Like the nice looking installer Mambo provides for instance.

I just installed SMF manually, I also used Fantastico to install SMF, but still , the same problem occurs everytime I try to apply a Mod.

I'm sorry, this is not something reinstalling or reconfiguring will change.  The next major version of SMF (1.1) will hopefully fix this issue, but until then you'll either have to ask your host to turn off safe mode, or apply mods manually.

That's how I found out about you!! I periodically check my fantastico in cpanel to see what upgrades are available and sure 'nuff, there it was. The installation went without a hitch. Thanks guys!!

how do you install mods manually?

Golden Rule -
Always take a back up first!

Any good mod should come with a read me file - following the instruction in there to the letter and you should be fine - step by step:

Download any files that need to have changes made to them using FTP
Make changes to the files using a text editor like Notepad by following the instructions in the mod file
Upload the changed files to their correct locations on the server
Upload any additional files included in the mod
Execute any files that make changes to the database structure

You should then have a working modification.

If the mod fails for what ever reason then re-upload the backup files and report any error messages in the thread started by the mod writer :)

Exactly how i found SMF.

Was using phpBB2, and thought i would what this "SMF" thingy was like.....what a revelation!

Am now in the process of converting from phpBB2 to SMF!

I install SMF using Fantastico, but changelog.txt and changelog-themes.txt are always missing, and I have to add them manually for forum upgrades and modifications, which is easy enough, but I have to be sure of installing from the same SMF version as Fantastico install for the upgrades to work. - This all works fine, but can someone tell me why these files are missing, and what are their significance? I've never installed an SMF forum without using Fantastico, so have nothing to compare with.

Thanks.

They simply list the changes which were made in alll the releases.
