Almost?  :P  What else does SMF need to be up there? :P

The only thing that comes to mind that SMF is lacking, is multiple database support (such as postgresql, etc) unless I'm mistaken.

Postgre, MS, Oracle... having support for all of them would be extremely useful and would make the product extremely flexible.

Is SMF 1.1 RC2 compatable with Joomla???

I hope!!

Yes, it is. You have to use bridge to get SMF<=>J! user registration working. Everything you need is here.

soulmanpete

how do you  upload the update as it's not compatiable with the package manage TY

JayBachatero

soulmanpete download the upgrade package from the download page and upload.  Also ALL of you mods will be uninstalled when you upgrade.

Having a database abstraction layer for multiple database systems slows down SMF.  ;)

What classes have you used? I am brand new (4 months) with php and databases and have tried PEAR:DB and a couple of others. I didn't realize they slowed things down much, but I am glad to know this if it is the case, and it sure appears to be.

In any event, I am not sure PEAR:DB is staying relevant in current form.

Don't care - I want it. MySQL isn't some God-given universal DB wand that I wanna be forced to use just for this product. If someone standardizes on Oracle and paid good money for it, then I'm sure as hell he wants to use it to store his forum data as well and not have to resort to an extra product and all the hassles managing it brings.

Oracle is a good database but is really unnecessary just for a forum script.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that the person only used it for a forum, but ok. He simply stated that to host something on oracle and then the forum on mysql is just stupidity.

Multiple database support should be added, since the database relies on queries I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to add "different" downloads for different databases using different queries etc, how would that slow it down? I agree that the addition of code in 'current' files may increase load-times, but giving a d/l per database wouldn't really do that, unless coded in an unoptimized format.

Even if the code is added to the current files, it wouldn't be that much a speed decrease, and would up the user base of Simple Machines Forum, so I don't see what your "speed" argument is based on... Has it been tried? Easy answer, no, so how could you know how it will effect speed?

Note: I've checked out forums for "multiple" databases, and those forums worked fast.

I suppose that if SMF stays MySQL only, it allows them to use MySQL-specific functions, etc.
Daniel15, former Customisation team member, resigned due to lack of time. I still love everyone here :D.
Go to smfshop.com for SMFshop support, do NOT email or PM me!

Oldiesmann

MySQL is the most pouplar database software among PHP users. The only forum system I know of that supports other database software in addition to MySQL is phpBB, and every phpBB user I know of is running it with a MySQL database. MySQL also has support for things that other database software doesn't and is much easier to work with. A database abstraction layer would only complicate things and would require re-writing SMF from the ground up.

But other database software packages can have, in many places, support for things that MySQL doesn't.

The concept of code preprocessing is an interesting idea to me.

Thanks but uploaded through my file manager to packages folder extracted but the upgrade didn't work  :(

JayBachatero

To upgrade you have to upload to your forum folder not package manager.  The package manager is only used for small updates like 1.0.5 to 1.0.6.
