I know the SMF crew don't like talking about time frames because they come across unforeseen problems etc but do they expect a RC this year or next because the time frame from beta 1 to 2 was rather long

christicehurst

They have noted that they are trying to make the time frame abit shorter. But you can't tell with bugs and other issues. I'm happy to see Beta 2 here.

The time frame between Beta 1 and 2 was needed due to the large number of changes that were made, particularly to the way the database stuff was handled.

At any rate, I think the devs will be getting an RC out in 2008.

If we don't have 2.0 Final out in 2008 then I have seriously failed!!

We're working as hard as possible to get 2.0 into the public - bug fixing is going incredibly fast - but we won't give it the first public outing until we think all significant bugs are quashed.

That's something really good to here. I'm really excited about getting 2.0, and though I know it's not the ideal, once I get my hands on any RC version I will use it on my live forum. I know that's bad, but that's exactly why I'm happy you're not giving it to the public until it's more stable and secure, because I know I'm not the only one who would do that :)

That is good to hear. Thanks for all your hard work! :)

Will this database change mess up some of our existing posts when the upgrade from 1.1.x to 2.0 is out ?

SleePy

Do they get messed up now (besides the new editor bugs)  :P

It mainly just changes how queries are made.

The upgrader should make changing from 1.1 to 2.0 painless and very smooth :)
So it should go all without any lost topics, posts,... (but you always have to make a backup anyway when you are upgrading).

Yes, I had very little trouble with over 1.1 million posts. I mirrored my setup for the test and then took it live.

Doe's anyone actually know what's different in SMF2 ?  I mean from an user prospective I can't see what's different.  This is Beta 2 we're using now isn't it and not SMF1.1.4  ???

flame baiter

A lot of things are different, just browse around and keep your eyes open.

@ devs: Take your time. No reason to rush the release!   :)

I have been that's why I was asking.  I know 1.1 like the back of my hand now and so finding it hard to see what's different in 2.0

Thantos

While we have put in a lot of user options the majority of the work has been on the backend (database) and moderators.

Thanks Thantos, so in effect end users wont see any difference in the next version of SMF.  I'll have to have a serous think about this now.

Thantos

I didn't say that.  There are quite a few end user options.  PM labels and ignore boards are two that spring to mind right off the bat.
