i didnt uninstall my 1.1 rc1 mods before updating to 1.1 rc2
and now theyre still there
Yes, delete them is your only way out.  And perhaps clear the installed package list in Packages.  Then pray that the mods you installed play nice with existing installation if they changed anything in database.

So, you've learned it the hard way... uninstall before upgrade. =\

well earlier when i tried it, it was then also saying failed for a few files
the ones that were successful i did uninstall
but the ones that failed uninstallation i didnt uninstall
so thats why i didnt uninstall them
as in the earlier version too it didnt uninstall
so what should i do, delete them?
or proceed with uninstall even if it says failed?

QuoteYou either download upgrade or update.  Your modifications will be lost so I suggest you backup EVERYTHING before you upgrade.

How does that work? What's the point of backing up your files if you have to overwrite them with new files? If you upload them again then u'll just be back where you were... SMF doesn't seem to have a very user-friendly upgrade process. :(

dvd-man,

All "minor" upgrades in SMF are released as packages, which are very simple to install and work automatically. (For example, upgrading from 1.0.2 to 1.0.4 etc). Upgrades like 1.0.5 to 1.1 however are major changes, and are impossible to apply as just a "patch". This is why you need to upload all the files.

Bear in mind that mods for SMF are released as packages, so you should be able to upload the new files, which *will* remove all your mods. But then go to the package manager and install them again (As long as they have been updated for the next release, or don't change too much that they still work).

As for themes, they should still work fine. Uploading won't touch any custom themes you've installed, so they should be there still afterwards. It's only if you've made manual changes to the Source files that you will have a problem - but you shouldn't be making modifications manually - that's why we have the package manager.

As for not having an easy upgrade, I'd be *very* interested to be shown any other software which has an easier process. As I said, I'm specically talking about major updates here, minor updates are much, much easier.

Firstly; I didn't think it *was* a major upgrade.. I shoulda been more clear in the beginning sorry..... I'm currently on 1.1 RC1 not 1.05.

As for easier upgrading software; well I was with phpBB boards before I moved over to SMF & did many many updates whilst I was running their software; I'll admit they didn't release any MAJOR updates whilst I was using it (I think I was running it from 2.03 - 2.017) but they offered several different options to make it easy upgrading.. the normal full install, the changed files only & the PATCH files which was for people with mods installed; I used this & never once had to worry about my files being lost or having to reinstall mods again. Sure sometimes some of it's edits failed & if they did if you are aware with their software it spat out where it failed & what to do manually to update the file. :)

It's the theme that used to be the default. I.E: The default theme in SMF 1.1 RC1 and below.

Quotethat doesnt happen, does it!??

Err.... I don't understand. The feature works.

Sorry dvd-man,

Maybe we didn't make it clear enough in the posts. Basically, any release that is *before* a final (i.e. either a beta or RC) is having active development carried out on it, so is likely to have major changes. I could produce a patch file for RC2, but it would be so huge it would take forever to make the changes manually.

What I used to do back in the days of using YaBB, was before an update I'd get my modded install, and an unmodded install and use diff (or any comparison tool, I actually used boardmod) to list all the differences. I then overwrote the old install with the new files and went back and manually made my changes.

I can assure you that once you get to 1.1 Final upgrades will be very, very simple. Also, not much will change between RC2 and Final, just a few bug fixes I hope. That said, if you're not that bothered about upgrading to RC2 and want to avoid hastle maybe you should wait for Final to come out before upgrading?

QuoteThe only complaint I have with the new default theme is, white text on a gray background doesn't go especially well. But other than that, very good.
You can easily change it though in style.css

-JayBachatero

Yeah, disregard my comments about that. I made a mistake somewhere along the line. All is well now. :)
