Title: SMF 2.0 Candidate 4 and SMF 1.1.12 have been released
Post by: Norv on November 01, 2010, 02:30:09 PM
Hello all,

Simple Machines is pleased to announce the immediate release of SMF 1.1.12 and SMF 2.0 RC4 to the public.
This version marks the fourth release candidate for 2.0, and includes about 350 new entries in the change log, consisting mostly of bug fixes, and interface tweaks and fixes mainly for the Curve theme.

We strongly recommend all users of earlier releases to upgrade to this release, because it contains a few security and privacy fixes, for both the 1.1.x line and 2.0.

As far as 2.0 RC4 is concerned, we are confident there are no major problems with this release, however there can still be. While we are still testing it, we recommend to not use it on live sites, unless you are comfortable with running software not yet considered stable.

Main points of this 2.0 release include:
Please find the changelog as usual, on the downloads page: http://download.simplemachines.org/ (http://download.simplemachines.org/)

Finally - please do not use this topic for support requests. You will get a much quicker and better response by posting in the relevant support board!

Regards,

Simple Machines

Are manual edits for the 1.1.12 update available?  I'll have to update for the guy who took over my old forum and I want to keep the mods and custom tweaks working, if possible.

(I don't see that well, so if I missed it, I apologize profusely.)   :D

No one of my boards updated from 1.11 to 1.12 by builded feature. I'll have to upgrade all of them manually.
Something is wrong in feature, patch or mod solution, isn't it?

I have 3 forums using 1.1.11 and when I click on recommended that you update your forum (http://norcalcarpclub.com/forum/index.php?action=pgdownload;auto;package=http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/downloads/smf_patch_1.0.20_1.1.12.zip;sesc=981a0a0d4c92a21000b6ddff8c797b0b) to the latest version as soon as possible. It only takes a minute! I get the below error on all three forums so I assume I'm not the only one?
An Error Has Occurred! The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

I believe upgrades from 1.1.11 to 2.0 must be done manually.

Go to the download site, get the RC4 large upgrade, upload all files and folders and travel to yourdomain.tld/upgrade.php if SMF files are in root.

I see the patch working in here:
Admin --> Packages

The one in the Administration Center seems a bit odd.. but it is updated.. might be cache.

OK thanks, Admin --> Packages works fine so I can update.

Administration Center link still gives the same error no matter how many times I clear my cache but I no longer need it since Admin --> Packages works fine.

Might be server cache :P

Great job! But we (as Turkish board) found a bug. While clicking Admin » Forum » Post and Topics, we're getting this error:
QuoteFatal error: Call to undefined function M() in C:\wamp\www\smf_2-0-rc4_install\Sources\ManagePosts.php on line 108
Just download a fresh copy of SMF 2.0 RC4 and replace that file. It should do the fix.

As I recall, there was a database change, a simple theme setting. Lemme see if I can find it.

EDIT: Got it ;)

INSERT INTO {$db_prefix}themes
    (id_theme, variable, value)
VALUES
    (1, 'forum_width', '90%')

DirtRider: I believe the info in the "current version" area is cached so it doesn't hit the SM.org servers every page load. You can either clear the cache dir manually, or wait for it to become stale.

Two questions (Not support):

1. Why hasn't this been announced on the front page? Something as important as this should be announced on your front page. ;) (Because many people just watch that part of the site for news. I didn't know this was out until I saw someone talk about it on the support forum. :P)

2. I thought that 1.1.11 was the final update for the 1.x series. :P

You don't have to, no.

V2 is still a RELEASE CANDIDATE.

v1.1.11 is the latest STABLE version of SMF.

Once v2 goes Final, mods and themes for v1.1.11 will still be here, but not many new ones are likely to be made.

Even then, upgrading to v2 is entirely YOUR choice. :)

and, Sincere, the answer hasn't changed just because of the RC4 release.

The 2.0 Final release will be soon. RC4 is intended to be the final RC, barring any MAJOR issues. We don't think there are any (except for all the glitches with the build process, which we find new ways to screw up each and every release.) which is why RC4 was released now.  So, barring any major issues as RC4 makes its way into public use, 2.0 Final will be released SOONtm

Same problem here. I have two forums, both running SMF version 1.1.11.

Yet both give me this error when I try to install the latest update:

An Error Has Occurred!

The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

I tried downloading it manually from the site but I keep getting the same error message.

The "call_integrate_function" inside templates..how do you actually use them for mods or custom theme needs?

Is it enough to supply a function called "integrate_display_buttons" yourself, which then adds your buttons to the supplied array - or do you actually call a internal SMF function named "integrate_display_buttons"? Or is it just a hook to a $modSettings entry, which has the actual function to execute, adding the buttons? (which would make more sense since several mods could define their own "integrate_display_buttons" functions at the same time. :P )

If thats so, then I wonder if its possible to let *themes* add their button function hooks too, added to $modSettings array in the template_init() function?

well all the hooks have always just had variables in $modsettings that get called at the right time

rc4 seems to have extended it by making the hooks support multiple functions (yay! makes my life easier for the one forum i look after) but the best doc is the source itself

Bloc,
Basically its like this:
$modSettings['integrate_display_buttons'][] = 'your_custom_function_name';

Of course, its best to use the proper functions to append that variable and let it get updated in the settings table so it will continue to exist. (ie add_integration_function('integrate_display_buttons', 'your_custom_function_name'); ).  Classes and methods are also supported.

I cannot replicate the problem and it should not happen...

Can you please try then from the Packages area, instead of Administration Center, if it still doesn't?

I couldn't replicate on my one remaining production 1.1 site. Link from the main page of the administration area worked. I did get prompted for FTP info as permissions needed some changes.

Server is running RHEL 5.5 x86_64 with Plesk 9.5.2. Apache HTTPd is 2.2.3 and PHP is 5.1.6.

If installing the package file directly instead of relying on the server to download does not work, please provide details of your configuration in a topic in the 1.x support board.

I downloaded SMF_1-1-12_update.zip to my desktop.  Then used Package Manager to upload it.  The following things were displayed:

The package you tried to upload either is not a valid package or has become corrupted.

I have the MOD installed that shows errors up in the header (errors at top v1.1) and it says on the page 791 errors were encountered.

And other 1.1.11 sites have reported this problem in this topic.

I downloaded SMF_1-1-12_update.zip to my desktop.  Then used Package Manager to upload it.

The "update" package is not supposed to be used from package manager.
It is a package which should be used by uploading ALL files contained in it, overwriting your forum files. That will overwrite mods too, and you should not use it unless you have good reasons to.

If you wish to update through package manager, please do use the patch found here:
http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/
Or, you can see on the Downloads page, the link to the left, to "Package manager updates". Those, and only those, are supposed to be used through Package manager.

The downloads site is currently pending an little refreshed look and explanations, which should prevent such misunderstandings in the future. There were many of them in the past, the whole naming scheme and usage of packages has a couple of confusing aspects. :)

sleepy, bloc

$modSettings['integrate_display_buttons'][] = 'your_custom_function_name';

won't work

it's expecting a comma separated list of functions to call, which is why you should use add_integration_hook to manage it rather than doing it yourself - the first line in both the call and add functions is to explode it...

The small update or large upgrade archive will upgrade your 2.0 installs. As is always the case with a pre-release version, there is no package manager upgrade.

Easy to do yourself!

Download the full install of RC3 and of RC4. Extract these into different directories. Now, use WinMerge, Meld, or DiffMerge to view all the changes between the releases. You can also use diff if you like that.

My 1.1.12 says -2009 and my RC4 says 2010, but those edits are always set to ignore errors - since they are not necessary for functionality, and so they may fail without a warning AFAIK.

there will not be a package manager update for 1.1.x to 2.0 anyway.
There has never been a package manager update between major versions.

nor will there be a package manager update between RCs and the final version.
Package manager releases are done for security releases and small version updates (i.e. 1.1.x to 1.1.y)

becometa,

Yes, though their data, settings, anything they saved in the database should be preserved. So you need to install them again after upgrading, but normally you shouldn't need anything more: you shouldn't need to re-configure them, to re-enter whatever data they had, because they should find it in the database again.
(it can depend on the particular mod's coding though)

As for 2.0 Final, the simple answer is: we need to KNOW first and foremost, what issues there may be with RC4. Anything that may prove major or affect user experience with 2.0, if case may be, will be solved ASAP, and the sooner we learn about it, the sooner we can solve it. Therefore we appreciate any reports, any input, on how RC4 performs and your experience with it.

The best way it would be to make an automatic update forum script, no downloading by user, just autoupdate based on 2.0 package manager idea and the windows update implementation, if there's any conflict, the error should appear on user monitor as on package manager.

It actually works that way, but only for stable versions. For an 1.1.11 forum, a notice appears in Admin panel about an update available, and at an admin's click, it downloads undercover and presents the test install page.

There are far too many changes between unstable versions for this to be done for them. (meaning among others, files to download, but also a huge amount of work to package all the changes in SMF's mod format, which this semi-automatic package manager update uses).

Thank you for your assistance!
Please feel free also to use the Bug Reports (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=137.0) board and Feature Requests (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=3.0) boards, as case may be. :) That's why they're there!

Hi there!

Since release of the RC4 there has been several new (small) issues in the bugtracker. Some has been resolved very fast, since several days the counter is on 21, not moving any forward (or back).
Can you shortly explain why at the moment there is no progress, even not assignments of the issues to programmer? A small holiday? (you deserve it!) or something else? 21 issues sounds to be getting closed very fast (this year)  ;D

Not everything - every minor issue - might be solved for Gold. Or not in core. Some will, though. But more importantly, instead, after this release, we're monitoring everything in this forum, Support boards experience and issues with 2.0 RC4, bugs reported if any, so that we uncover as fast as possible if there are any serious problems coming up. If there are or there seem to be, we're debugging them, documenting them for the support team, working on some site changes too which may allow us to provide fixes to the community faster, and other things.

If there will be no major issues coming up, or only some with practically trivial fixes (yes, there can be), then with or without some of the minor issues tracked for the moment, we may see a Gold release. That remains to be seen yet, though.

Congrats all. Looks good on my test forum - one step closer to gold.

Given I have so many mods and theme edits on my production forum I'll be waiting for that final release as it can't be far away now. Well done.

Installed and migrated my Community to V2.0 RC4 - Yesterday around 12pm
Great work!  I really like the layout of this much nicer, though the templates are a LITTLE more difficult to work with.

Big Pros-
The Core system switch panel is great.  (Makes handling advanced and custom profile fields very easy)
The menu navigation system is laid out much nicer and is less confusing to use. (For stock install)
Comments, PM, and profile sections all seem a bit easier to use with a bit nicer functionality.

Great job on the development of this platform.  Keep up the good work guys!

Is there a recommended procedure for upgrading from 2.0 RC3 to RC4 when mods have been installed?

I've read this thread and didn't see any instructions pertaining to that.

The Upgrade Instructions (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading#Uploading_SMF) also don't indicate this.

The Upgrades (http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/) page doesn't have anything for RC4, which is understandable since it's a RC.

The Downloads (http://download.simplemachines.org/) page has Large Upgrade and Small Update installs and the Large Upgrade does mention modifications but there is not enough information for me to be confident that the modifications won't be overwritten or cause other issues.

Do I need to uninstall all mods before upgrading from RC3 to RC4 and then install the updated mods that are marked as working with RC4?

Thanks

In general, this is the recommended procedure for a development release. If you use the large upgrade package, you won't need to uninstall as all modified SMF files will be overwritten. You will probably need to clear out the package manager afterward (delete the modifications to remove from the list), however.

If there is a converter for it, yes. It looks like 1.4 is the most recent. You are welcome to request a converter for version 1.6. To do so, go to the converter download section and follow the link at the top to make a request.

I've just upgraded a forum we have from rc3 to rc4, and here's a couple of issues I experienced:

- webinstall.php had a couple of issues, the second of which I couldnt solve so had to upgrade manually
- the upgrade went through seamlessly, but when it finished and I looked at the new forum, the left and right padding from the edges of the curve frame to the edges of the browser window was set to zero which didnt look great.

Ive looked at the CSS, and the new code for the body tag is:

body
{
   background: #E9EEF2 url(../images/theme/backdrop.png) repeat-x;
   font: 78%/130% "Verdana", "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;
   margin: 0 auto;
   padding: 15px 0;
}

Another forum I have that is running RC3, has 5% for the second padding value, and I've now changed it back to that on the new RC4 installation, which solves the issue.

Strangely enough though, Ive just looked at the same CSS on this Simple Machines forum, and that doesnt have the padding issue, but has the same CSS code above.

Chris.

The CSS issue, is not an issue with CSS, but with a lost width setting - can happen on upgrades. See the theme settings, adjust width to 95% to get the old look back ;)

However, that being said...   I just realized that you are using smfnew (which is not related to simplemachines.org at all).   You will have to ask them when they will upgrade, since smfnew does not allow individual admins to add packages for mods, upgrades or themes

I finally had the time to upgrade from RC3 to RC4. It's always a lot of work, re-installing all the modification and fitting everything in our own template. Upgrades with the package-manager are nicer, but I know this is still RC.
Anyway, it's running perfect and smooth! Fast as always. I noticed a lot of bugs are solved in this release. Normally I have to fix many things, but this time it looks very good! Great job guys and girls!
I can feel we are close to the final 8)

Not likely to happen any time soon. Internal problems and such. And the next release will not in all probability resolve bot registrations either as it is rampet in RC4

My understanding was that the internal problems were mostly worked out and the delay was in getting copyright transfered for a license change for 2.0 final.

Spam registrations are a problem for everyone. As long as the cost is lower than the reward, it will remain so. I'm not sure how you think a programatic update will "fix" something that is spurred by economic considerations. There are automated spamming tools now that bypass any CAPTCHA image by using actual humans. The most popular forum spamming tool interfaces with a human-backed service that costs as little as $1 per 1000 valid solutions.

SMF could temporarily stop the tide by changing the registration form. That wouldn't last long as the software providers would update their wares to handle the new form.

The only long-term solution to stopping automated spam is to make your anti-spam protections unique. That's what the registration questions are there for. Make some custom questions that apply to your forum and you'll see a marked decrease in bad registrations. Maybe implement a different system in your forum. By making it different from the default and other forums you've just made it so that automated solutions can't work.

Should have some development/release roadmaps. This will give rough estimates for site administrator to plan for upgrades especially when the administered sites are full of integration with other softwares.

we don't even do rough estimates...   because this is a volunteer project and we tell all of our team that Real Lifetm comes first, it is difficult if not impossible to predict fixes, updates or releases.

We release the product when it's ready...   Or in this case, when a few other things have been worked out. Unfortunately, as much as I would like to give even and estimated date, I can not.

Why not use the registration questions mod then?. I have been using it since early 2007 and have not had one bot join my forum and it is one very busy forum  :)

Can someone say whether V2 final will be release within the next 12 months?. I need to do a clean install and would prefer to do it with version 2 than have to install 1.1.12 again and then install it all again once V2 is released  :-\.

This is why I've been requesting MOD authors to not abandon the 1.1.x branch yet.  Even if 2.0 went Gold tomorrow, a lot of cautious sites (including mine) won't switch for months.  A lot of us will allow time for the rollout, the inevitable fixes as sites encounter issues upgrading from 1.1.x or the last few very subtle bugs appear, as well as waiting for favorite MODs to migrate (and fix their bugs).  So, I expect a lot of Production sites to still be on 1.1.x in 2H2011.

A lot of us simply don't have the time or resources to run Test and Production environments or be able to devote hours to a clean install and rollback where we can apply inplace upgrades.  And I think that percentage of SMF users is a lot larger than realised by the very skilled and proactive Admins who frequent here.

Just my thoughts...

Well, in all honesty 2.0 has had very thorough testing in it's RC stages, and when it goes Final, no big surprises should come up anymore. Small fixes, patches and so on may of course follow, that is just normal - but I wouldn't expect anything major to occur. :)

Well, I've felt the prep cycle has been very professional (multiple RC candidates and such), so really I think the last major area of concern will be 1.1.x -> 2.0 migrations.  And to be honest, I know I can't allocate large blocks of time to finessing an upgrade, and a lot of other sites won't migrate if it looks like a new install scenario.

It would just be a bit more confidence-building when migrations are tested out by the adventurous.  Don't know if that would be another RC or what, but dropping that path out there cold in the Gold version would be disconcerting to me.

I upgraded my own site, when 2.0 was only on RC1 if I remember correctly, could've been RC2 though just as well, but the point is that most upgrades I've seen - including mine - have gone through near flawlessly. I say near, since there have been some slight problems with 1) Losing UTF8 setup from settings.pgp - easily solved. 2) Losing width settings from themes - easily fixed as well. And 3) Temporarily losing board sorting on index, until the order is changed once, and changed back again.
These I think are currently the most common problems with the upgrade, and as you can see, there's nothing too alarming in that short list :)

I recently migrated my 1.1.12 install to 2.0RC4.
156,000 posts
13,000 topic
600 members
Database - over 500 meg

Not the largest forum in the world, but my original install was in 2006 and the site absorbed every update/upgrade patch since then to keep it up to date, and the migration to 2.0 went off flawlessly.
Thanks SMF ;)

Come on with the final already. I have been one of the few that has been waiting VERY patiently and has kept my mouth shut with the long delay, infighting, legal BS, etc, but enough is enough. I know it's free software, but I've had enough.

WHEN is 2.0 final going to be released? I don't want to hear reasons, excuses, or push-offs; I want a flat answer. There are other boards that are just as capable as SMF, but I have been loyal and prefer to stick with SMF.

And of course I expect this post to be deleted and me be banned; that seems to be the history here from what I've been reading.

We cannot say when it's going to be released, as we honestly do not know yet, when exactly that would be. Many of us would like to see final already, you are not alone in this - but still, the only real answer you can get for now, is that it will be released when it is ready, and the team is ready, and the legal matters are handled. Don't worry, I'm positive this will happen eventually, and I am personally hoping it will happen sooner, rather than later. ;)

SMF is a big project and will take a few months to release a new version, because of all the bug fixes in different files, packaging the installation/upgrade packages, changing the version numbers in all files, etc.

I say, be even more patient ;)

Are you trying to get banned? I ask that because you seriously seem to be asking for it.

Bans are usually handled for very serious reasons. Major disruptions of the community after repeated warnings, for example. Criticism isn't a bannable offense or even I would have been banned long ago.

The official word has been that the major hold on the release is some legal stuff. I'm guessing it's concerning the copyrights. Given that there has historically been no CLA and the semi-official word being that 2.0 will be licensed BSD, a reasonable effort would need to be made to contact  all past contributors for agreement on the change, and possibly signing of a CLA so that such delays can't happen in the future.

Of course, that last part is just conjecture on my part as the whole thing has been as opaque as mud. So much for community transparency...

Release dates have always been vague. It's a volunteer project for a start, obviously that will affect such things in a huge way.

Why people get hung up over such things is a mystery to me. After all what does it matter anyway? If your forum is working and functions as planned - big deal.

Exactly how I see it - wether it be RC or Final, as long as it works for you and you have no big problems with it, what's the rush?
Title: Re: SMF 2.0 Candidate 4 and SMF 1.1.12 have been released
Post by: frozenas on February 05, 2011, 07:41:18 PM
Well, as for the rush - I can understand the guy. (don't get it wrong, that I'm rushing things) Of course, if his reasons are the same as mine: I'm waiting for SMF 2.0 final, because I want to make a good and nice forum without the need to RE-DO everything, every plugin, which requires cross-file edit, template, etc.. That's why I'm waiting for the final and currently sticking with RC3. It's said, that a lot will change in the final release. And if there won't be big changes - there still will be the need to edit files, that some plugins are supposed to edit and reinstall all the plugins and probably the template. Which means - double work.

If his reason is just to have the latest version or feel good about it - he's not in my favorite people list.
On the other thought, he isn't now either. His post wasn't pleasing. He WAITED long enough... Waited? It's a free project. Go pay for IPB or Vbullet, or whatever suits you best. You won't have to wait for the new release. It's already one of the best available, except it's not free. I'd pay for it myself, if I had money.
In other words - nobody's forcing you to use it. Use other software, if you don't like waiting. Don't complain, that the release takes too long...

I have got to say that having been a user of SMF since 2006, I am also beginning to look at alternatives because of this seemingly endless delay in getting 2.0 final released. There are some major features that I need from it in order to continue to grow my community, most specifically the paid subscriptions model.

My site has grown to the point where it has the potential to be my full time job and to be quite honest, I would be happy to pay a license fee for 2.0 right now, just to get that subscriptions feature. I've grown with you guys from nothing, but I can't afford to stop growing while you sit on this new version.

I understand some of people who asking why, why. They are looking at other scripts for ex. phpBB, myBB etc. they releasing newer versions faster than SMF and thats why the rumor is.

But guys try to understand SMF isn't like other scripts, SMF is unique. Of course we do not want be way ahead from other scripts, the team is making the best free script not the free bug script. That's why better to have RC version with few bugs (it's working right? preety good damnit!) than release "stable" one and after it releasing lot of patches to it because OMG we forgot about this, omg we noticed this is very important bug and didnt see it before.

Don't be egoistic, the Team is doing great job and the bugtracker is showing it the best way.

No offense intended to the SMF team who do a great job. But the team needs to understand that if they want to stay current and remain a force in the forum software world, they need to tighten up development times.

I've just spent a few hours looking at IPBoard features this morning and I think that this is the way forward for me. I'd love to give the money to SMF, who brought me here to begin with, but I have to think about the future. I can't wait around hoping for a stable 2.0 indefinitely.

Well, maybe he meant another aspect about the unstable side: he meant, that the plugins/themes will change and there's no real plugins for some things (SMF-Joomla bridge for example), until the final version comes out. That would be a good reason, if he's using 1.1. In fact, it's still a nice reason for me using RC3.

Why are people under the impression that they must start from scratch every time they update on a pre-release? It's seriously not that difficult. All you need to do is re-apply modifications after the manual update. Exactly the same process as doing a manual update of a stable release.

If you're making manual changes without documenting them, you're doing it wrong. Either keep a log of the changes or use an automated tool to track those changes. There are plenty of tools out there that are meant to help you with those kinds of things.

Given the past issues with the Joomla! folks, I don't think there will be a huge effort for a first-party bridge. There are several projects that will bridge SMF and Joomla! in a license-compatible manner for the SMF 2.0 series if you're really intent on using Joomla! for your site.

Which does give me a lot of confidence.  However, for sites, such as ours, where I don't have a lot of time to clean up issues, you'll see many waiting until SMF says the code is GOLD, use it on Production, and the MODs have been updated.  We're just cautious because having a Production site crash is a really big support issue to us.

However, there are very few issues, and haven't been any demonstrated data-loss problems in quite some time. If you take regular backups, you should be fine. Unfortunately, too many admins don't take backups and then run into large issues when there is a hacking or other situation that backups would solve.

Do not know if it's just a problem for me but as a forum downloading the installation package from 1.1.12 and the Polish language is not always act in the forum rotator news - that the notice and email to forum members.

It does not change the first news of another in browsers other than firefox.

I use RC3/4 on my sites one of which has almost 3 million posts, 32k members and is busy round the clock.  So, the reason that the warning is there is because there MIGHT be a bug which we haven't addressed...

Hi there!

Also if you take a look into the bug tracker: it is down to 15 today! There is quite progress. The only real stopper, more than one time written, is the legal issues and the licence switch. As I see, until this is done, the final is out.
It would just be nice what there has to be done until ready, to see also there a progress. This would make waiting easier.

Thank you everyone for the responses. Most of them make absolute sense. It has just been frustrating waiting and waiting for so long. The site I work on is still running 1.1. I will not install an RC version on the owner's production site, no matter how many people it is working fine for. I volunteer my time to update the site since the owner does not have technical experience, so any type of rework on my part wastes my time, whether it be installing a new SMF release, updating plugins, waiting for a plugin to be updated to support the next SMF update, or having to fix plugins myself.

Running an RC version is not an option. I have supported SMF for years and love SMF, but it's time for the site to be upgraded to a board with more features. I would be happy to pay for SMF 2.0 or any other forum software so we can take advantage of new features. I have been putting the site owner off hoping for 2.0 final, but if it will be later than sooner, then I will have no choice other than to go with a commercial product. I would much rather run SMF 2.0 final though; I prefer SMF over other boards and have much more experience with SMF.

Paying for SMF 2.0 won't make the development any faster, so I'm not sure why that is even a consideration on your part.

My desire for 2.0 comes from the need for a custom theme. I don't want to invest serious $$$ paying for a custom theme for a RC only to have to pay again to have it reworked for 2.0-final.

I also have a lot of mods and despite keeping track of edits, it's a huge chore reinstalling them all. Going from an RC to 2.0 final would involve a tremendous amount of duplicated effort.

I need 2.0 final as a stable base to modernize my site upon and provide the new look and updated features necessary to stem it from bleeding users. Unfortunately, with 2.0 delayed well over a year past the original expected ETA, my site has suffered tremendously.

You're all talking about 'updated features'. I quess you haven't figured it out yet. 2 gold will be based on what ever is available in RC4 with nothing new added. In fact if what I've heard is true, this version has been in the works for about 5 years and there are no new features added period. The last 5 years have been spent fixing bugs and with the lack of dedicated 'volunteers' who know what it means to volunteer for something, Gold is not likely to happen anytime soon. Appearently they stilll have 15 bugs to fix and who knows when these 'volunteers' will find the time to fix them.

You are completely wrong, and it is obvious you did not read this topic at all, or any of the other 100 topics on SMF2.0 final either. Just a troll comment is all that you've given.

Really? Perhaps then you could elaborate on what new features are being added between RC4 and 2 Gold?

Are you saying version 2 has not been in production for 5 years?

And are you saying that the past 5 years have not been spent fixing bugs in version 2?

Last report a few posts up says there are still 15 bugs that need attention. Is this wrong too?

You should avoid name calling, it does nothing to backup what you say other than tell others you are lacking in your communication and social skills.

QuoteThe last 5 years have been spent fixing bugs and with the lack of dedicated 'volunteers' who know what it means to volunteer for something,

So the quotes around 'volunteers' isn't a stab at the Team? And the comment that the Team doesn't know what a volunteer is?

QuoteGold is not likely to happen anytime soon.

And you know this how? Are you on the Team? Have you read any of the posts about SMF2 final lately? So what does "anytime soon" amount to for you? a few months? Another year? Troll bait.

QuoteAppearently they stilll have 15 bugs to fix and who knows when these 'volunteers' will find the time to fix them.

Sorry, but it would appear you know nothing about software releases. You'll never release a bug free final version. Nobody can do that. Just because there are 15 bugs in the bug tracker, doesn't mean that they all have to be fixed by final. And let me just emphasize the troll comment about "volunteers" again. And maybe you should take a look at the activity in the bug tracker? It's obvious you haven't. Almost 40 of the last 50 bugs have been fixed this year! As you can see you are completely misinformed and are indeed a Troll throwing comments out for bait.

Not a stab at anyone. It is a stab at the constant misuse of the word to justify the delay in production.

QuoteAnd you know this how? Are you on the Team? Have you read any of the posts about SMF2 final lately? So what does "anytime soon" amount to for you? a few months? Another year? Troll bait.

'Any time soon' is from Kindred. He constantly says it could be released any time soon. In fact if I'm not wrong, he puts TM behind it like it's his trademark reply whenever the question is asked about a release date. And yeah it's conceivable it could mean a few months, another year to anyone. Troll bait? Admin abuse. come on you must be more intelligent than to use name calling as a means to deny the validity of someones observation. Try answering the questions I posed?

QuoteSorry, but it would appear you know nothing about software releases. You'll never release a bug free final version. Nobody can do that.

Really? Where did I say that?

Not a fact - Speculation. Although 2.0 has been feature locked for a long time, small things have been worked on all the time, and along the road some of those things have ended up as small - yet for some, important - new features in the package. Also there have been bugs, security issues, team issues, legal issues, support and documentation to be worked on at the same time, so you can probably understand the team has actually had their hands full at times

Completely, utterly BS. 2.0 has been worked on for years, that's true - but at that time, ALL 2.0's new features have been introduced, Curve was introduced, and all the 2.0 bugs, and security issues that have emerged have been worked on, and the years gone by have really amounted to a lot of positive development in the end product. I can say this as an end user that has pretty much nothing to do with the development side... I've been using RC versions or Dev snapshots from around the time RC2 was released, on a big (Near 2M posts) board even.

If you are going to count bugs, then do count bugs killed as well - the tracker has been very active lately, and stuff is really happening fast these days.

Also, I simply hate the way you imply we don't know what volunteering means - I'm a volunteer, I do this because I wish to help people, I do this when I can - But that doesn't mean I'm dropping my job, social life, and family out of the picture to make you happy!

Road Rage, find another highway - how can you criticise something that is free and provided by volunteers? Go pay your troll tolls elsewhere and see if the road is any smoother.

Been using SMF 2 for two and a half years on a live site and upgraded at each release. Respect.

Actually..while it may seem a long time, remember that 2.0 was a major rewrite of 1.1. Taking a stable version and changing large parts of code, not to mention the entire set of templates, took a good deal of time, 1-2 years just on that. Unfortunately past events(which I do NOT agreed was for the benefit of SMF, although it WAS good that the team leadership were exchanged) also delayed things with at least a year more.

So your 5 years aren't really 5 years of real coding, more like 2-3 and the rest due to changing of team members, who had to re-learn the code, before they could create anything new. I can't find many members that was here when 2-0 was started, and that means the original "founders" of certain code parts are just gone.

I see nothing surprising about this time-frame in that light, and I am - as should you and others, RoadRash - glad that we now indeed have a stable 2.0, with just minor bugs left to correct. What the future holds, no-one knows. But its up to US if SMF is to survive, the team can't just operate on its own, nor will they stay on if you bully them further.

When have anyone ever done their best when getting scorn instead of praise..?

My apologises to those who have taken my post out of context and feel they have been attacked in some way. Not the case.

I have nothing but praise and admiration for those who contribute productively to this great forum software. If I didn't think highly of it, I would not have invested my time in promoting it for the past few years.

It's all to easy to misinterpret the typed word, or it's intent.

I stand corrected on those points that clarified my misinterpretation of others posts and I thank you for that.

You certainly have my respect for taking this stand. :) If there are more of you, SMF will indeed survive(the true supporters of it).

I am a bit amazed at how team members have reacted..but I'll chalk it up to them feeling a bit cornered. After all, after working these past months to finally get SMF to *stable* RC final versions(and final version will not be far away then, thats a given) and then get members complain about something MOST of them have no stake in(they were not on the team back then) feels unfair.

For myself I was really fed up with SMF for a good time..but now I see positivism back in again, and that got to be a good sign for the software. :) So chill out, enjoy it and contribute again - if you are so inclined - in mods/themes. What can you loose? The ghosts are gone, and the software is still here.

;D
