Webby

Well, add me to the list :P

It takes longer to get a reply from the "dutch translators" than it is to translate.....so it seems.....

LINK TO THE DUTCH FILES

Now only the dutch helpfiles, but I'll do that when there is a more final version of it all.

bostasp

Portuguese and Italian sent off, should be on the downloads page in the next few days :)

Webby, it would probably be best if you attached those files, or sent them to either myself or [Unknown].
I'll add you to the list in due course, since you haven't properly liaised with the rest of the Dutch translators, you've probably caused more work for all of us.

I'm a regular user, so I can't attach anything....

I caused more work for who ?! Why ?! I'm trying for days now to offer my support. I IM'd Compuart on yabb.nl, he is the only one I know, and he's great. But he didn't reply to my IM (he has too much things to do I guess).  I then translated the untranslated pieces in a few hours, and no tap on the shoulder ?!

Too bad.....I am still willing to help (and so I did with the Y1G and YaBBSE language packs), but it isn't nice to read that I caused you guys more work just by helping with the translation....

Ok, just tell me what to do, and I'll help you with it all, deal ;) ?

Daniel D.

I'd pick Webby before I pick someone else :P! He did great things for SE (like he said) and he's a must for translation!! 8)

If everyone is translating one thing, and one person has translated one part of the language files, and someone is also translating that part without the other one knowing, then doesn't that cause more work for all of the folks translating into that one language?

Kris and XrD.nl also wanted to do some Dutch translation for the exact same reason you want to, cause so many bits are untranslated. Did you contact them, cause they might of been able to at least show you what they'd done?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love more and more people to do translations. I just don't like to see about 4 people working on the same untranslated strings without knowing that someone else is also doing it.

In regards to your translation, I'll pack it up and send it off for you, see if we can get it on the download page in the next few days.

Webby

It has been a while : 3 (THREE) guys working on 1 translation. I didn't contact the 2 you mentioned, but I did try to contact Compuart.

I still don't get it : I did it all to help, first of all for my own board, and second of all to help you guys and all other dutch users.  I've uploaded it on www.yabb.nl, and the dutch users will use it if they want until the new (beta?) version of SMF will come out.

The only thing I did was speed it all up a bit and help the dutch community.

Furthermore : when did you receive the last translation(s) of any of these guys ? I was offering my help 10 days ago, and you were going to "have a word" with the dutch translators. Did you have a word with them ? What did they say ? Why wasn't I informed ?

I'm not getting you wrong, but I just didn't want to wait to get my board fully translated. Now it's done.

Hey Webby. Case you were in that list as dutch translator and just had not the time for a couple of weeks. Would you want that someone else took over your job - just because you had not the time to respond right now? Honestly?  ;)

I tell folks who want to translate to do it when they can, and to talk to anyone else translating to see where they are. When someone says they are going to translate I don't expect to receive anything off them, nor do I press for a translation off them, I occasionally ask around to see how people are getting on, but that's about it.

If you look at French and Italian, they have two or three members translating for them, but I only receive one pack from them, not two or three. They work as a team, and again, I don't mind when or how I receive language files off them.

The way it's all handled is slightly laid back, but this is a project that is developed in people's spare time.

I understand the whole getting your board translated and translated at that very moment, but practically you cannot do it with a system where a few people are unavailable for various periods of time.

I haven't received anything from any of the other three Dutch translators, as I said before, Dutch, generally speaking, is translated internally.

[Unknown]

Sigh... I dunno, it's fine.  Thanks for translating Webby.

Don't get me wrong Webby, I'm grateful for your contribution :)

This isn't the case (as you can read in Bostasp's reply), but if this was the case....hmmm dunno.....
In the YaBBSE-period (;)) I made a full translation, and there was somebody who made a translation also (with a lot of errors), but I can't seem to remember being mad or dissapointed about him doing the translation also. No.

Well, it's done, let's go make the best of it ok ?

Hi,

I'm doing the Czech translation now and I've got a little problem. I'm using the classic theme - is it possible that it uses different stringset than default theme (ie. is default theme the superset or are they completely different)?

My problem lies in the somewhat problematic czech grammar which needs different prepositions in different contexts or changes the word suffix depending on the preceding number (1 uzivatel, 2/3/4 uzivatele, 5/6... uzivatelu {uzivatel=user}). The problem lies in string concantenation which is used. If I had the option to change the word order, I would write Uzivatelu: 1 (2,3,....) and sh*t would happen. This way it looks very strange.

Or am I overlooking something?

Also, is it possible to translate name of the theme?

I got similar (?) problem with Finnish http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=7526.0

You can translate theme description by adding lanquages folder in that themes dir. Then put there settings.whateverlanquage.php and translate.

Hi Owdy,

interesting reading, but... I don't see any solution from the developers.

The differences between classic x default themes are a problem but not the real one. Real problem for me is that they're concantenating the {correctly translated} words into sentences which then don't make any sense in Czech language.

In classic, I currently have on the top:
Čau admin, máš 0 zpráv, 0 nových.

The code for this is in classic/index.template.php, line 106.

1] $txt[247] {hey}
2] username
3] $txt[152] {you have}
4] messages
5] $txt[153] | $txt[471] (any|1) {messages|message}
6] $txt['newmessages4'] {,}
7] unread_messages
8] $txt['newmessages0'] | $txt['newmessages1'] (1|any) {is new|are new}

This isn't going to work in czech language.
On line 5 it would need:
0, 5, 6,... - zpráv
1 - zprávu
2,3,4 - zprávy

On line 8 it would need:
0,5,6,... - je nových
1 - je nová
2,3,4 - jsou nové

I understand this isn't interesting for the SMF developers but I'd like some workaround for this. I really don't want to go the way of custom themes - this may work for default/classic but not for others...

The easiest solution for me is:
Čau admin, zpráv: 1, nových: 1
It's not 100% kosher either, but acceptable.

Would it be possible for some developer to comment on it?

The similar problem is in concantenation of strings and using some prepositions (on, by) = these translate different in different contexts, so when I change them somewhere to look better, it suddenly looks pidgin somewhere else  ::)

Yeah, I did that, but I also wanted to translate their names, because I've got a conflict for Theme (Téma) word, because Czech XPs uses the word Téma for skins, but also Topic is Téma. So I translated Theme as 'vzhled' (look/appearance) and I don't want the users to be puzzled by the Theme word in the theme name...

bostasp

You could probably translate the name of the theme, but to play it safe it's probably not worth it.

Grammar and which way round the number goes... ah. You could include a modified Czech theme which changes the way round it is written, since the number is in the theme and the translation is in the language file, so you can't change the order that way.

Just wondering, wouldn't it be worth putting the number (say it's $context['view_num_guests']) in with language files...

hmm... [Unknown] ...?

[Unknown]

The "Hey, etc." part has already been moved into a separate string for the next release.

Skoen

That seems like a good thing to do, sort that bit out so it's separated abit from the rest of the stuff. Oh, btw, after the next release is done, maybe do a rollcall (in this topic, perhaps) on when the translations for that release will be done, so you know when it will be ready to be added to the Downloads page.

bostasp

I would very much like to have a rollcall soon, maybe even before the next release, since I've had one or two things crop up on me recently in my "life" and I feel like I've falled behind a bit, so I would really like to be able to see what is happening with everyone :)

I'm also forcing myself to learn Hindi, so be warned ;)
