MCK, I realize this is a long thread...  but the problems with Ajax chat and Aeva Media (originally with SMG) are mentioned several dozen times, Please use search?

Ajax chat does not install with the correct respect for coding locations.

the easy thing: uninstall Ajax chat, install Aeva and the re-install Ajax chat.

v1.1 is out.

Version 1.1                                         March 8, 2010

Nao, after all that has happened in the past days, I am impressed. It takes a great man to come back on his words especially if he was right and has a right  to be aggrieved.

Nao 尚

YogiBear, I'm not so sure...
<storyofmylife>It's interesting to note that the reason I learned PHP in the first place, many years ago, was because I wanted to make a web interface for ladder games of my Kyodai Mahjongg. I wanted people to be able to find opponents via my website, send their scores online, and chat with a web interface. Unfortunately my skills in PHP and Javascript were very minimal at the time, and the project proved too hard to accomplish for me, and in the end quite destroyed much of the enjoyment I had in making the game itself. So, in a sense, anytime I hear about online scores or web chatrooms, it tends to break my heart a little.</storyofmylife>

I guess this is definitely one of the types of mods I'll never get around to make myself. Plus, I believe there are already popular shoutboxes around here...?
I will not make any deals with you. I've resigned. I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered.

It's working good over here. The new slideshow feature is fantastic.

Arantor

Nao: None of them have been officially updated for RC2 let alone RC3; any such things are either non-AJAX and part of the portals, or AJAX and last updated officially by their authors for RC1.
Holder of controversial views, all of which my own.

Nao 尚

@petesky> I don't have that problem myself...

@MCK> You should still install that code manually. It's the Media button. If you don't use the gallery, though, you don't need the button for now.

@Kindred> Actually I didn't (and still don't) remember about that specific incompatibility... Can you post the colliding code if you have it under the hand?

@Soms> Well, it's not misplaced pride, but I technically didn't come back on my words... I just postponed my actions for later, when I'll have more time to concentrate and decide what exactly I resign from, and what exactly I'll do about AeMe's distribution.
If you look inside the v1.1 code, I made a last minute change where the sitelist (and last version update) is now retrieved from noisen.com, as opposed to the mod page. That way, nobody will ever be able to complain that I'm artifically upping my download stats with a single sitelist update release, which has always bothered me. Well, technically this is mostly so that I can update the mod in the future without having to use the mod site at all. Of course, the downside is that Aeva Media's functionalities are now dependent upon noisen.com's stability. Although it's been very fair for the last few years.

@chep> The only thing I don't like about the updated Highslide is that the zooming animation is not as smooth as it used to be. Particularly at the end of the animation, it tends to move the picture a bit, "fixing" its position at the last moment. Hopefully I'll find a fix for that later. Or maybe it only appears on Opera, I don't know... The highslide.js file doesn't have the glitch.
I will not make any deals with you. I've resigned. I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered.

I still don't understand, as I said last year, why these conflicts can't be allowed to play themselves out within some semblance of sanity in an off topic board somewhere. I can understand not wanting support boards to become bogged down in controversy and not allowing profanity, but this site sometimes tries too hard to be a rerun of Barney the Purple Dinosaur. "I  LOVE YOU,  YOU LOVE ME la la la, you get the point. Who cares if some people flame each other as long as it's not in the support boards. Let them have at it, as I say, within reasonable limits. This is a fairly high traffic site on the WORLD WIDE web. All kinds of people from everywhere wind up here. Some will have conflict with each other. So what? It's entertaining. Why does there have to be discipline, and seemingly selective discipline at that, whenever somebody "raises their voice".

NAO sometimes displays the tact and diplomacy of thermo nuclear holocaust. I find myself shaking my head and kinda chuckling as I read along. He is also, aside from being a frighteningly skilled coder, obsessively dedicated and for all his bluster extremely supportive of his work. Sure I think he's thin skinned sometimes and pounces on people a bit hard on occasion, but welcome to the world. If I were to pout and stew every time somebody didn't act how I'd like I'd have to lock myself in closet to avoid being offended.

I like the guy. I like his long detailed overly technical explanations... alot. Having learned just enough about what he does to be able to envision the looooong eyeball burning hours he must spend on his work and then seeing him here day after day as people like me ask the same questions for the 1000th time, I can easily  forgive his shortcomings. I have plenty of my own.

Why do these situations have to degenerate into bans, even for guys like this weightman clod? Let them yell at each other in an off topic board and reserve the support boards for support.

If I were in that position I would want NAO on my team even if I couldn't stand the guy. I'd shake his hand, smile in his face, take care of business and maybe call him names behind his back, but I would not lose the opportunity to utilize his skills. Unless of course I were to allow personal issues to interfere with my commitment to the project.

I hope this can be worked through.

Nao 尚

Well I'm sure if their authors want to give up on them, they can easily find skilled coders who are willing to continue development!

(Please, PLEASE don't ask me.... :-X)

So what? It's entertaining.
Not everyone thinks the same about that, but I do ;) Well, I enjoy a little flame war from time to time. Just reading or participating, I'm cool.

QuoteHe is also, aside from being a frighteningly skilled coder,
NOT!

Quoteobsessively dedicated
Am.
Which is due to two factors:
- I just hate unfinished business. So I tend to polish something until it really shines. (See: Kyodai Mahjongg. Is it human to work on a frigging puzzle game for nearly 10 years? No it isn't.)
- Sometimes, I get really, really bored... And when I'm bored, I tend to gather a lot of ideas in my to-do-lists. And after a while, I try implementing them. But the to-do-list always grows faster than I can reduce it, unfortunately. (It's current at about 120 items. Only implemented 3 items in February. So it'll be pretty much impossible to implement even half of that in the end.)

QuoteSure I think he's thin skinned sometimes and pounces on people a bit hard on occasion, but welcome to the world.
Sometimes I think I should just tweak this from the AeMe license:

QuoteIn no event shall the authors and/or copyright holders
be liable to any party for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, exemplary, or
consequential damages arising in any way out of the use or misuse of the package.
Should add: "In no event shall the authors have to bear with any critics or insults from users of the package. If you don't like it, don't use it!!"

QuoteIf I were in that position I would want NAO on my team even if I couldn't stand the guy. I'd shake his hand, smile in his face, take care of business and maybe call him names behind his back, but I would not lose the opportunity to utilize his skills.
Err... I beg to differ. It is precisely because I've been told some people were calling me a jerk in the private team boards, that I've been on occasion lashing out at the team for not having the courage to either invite me, or publicly reject me... As it stands now, they're trying to get the best of both worlds. I'm not saying I don't understand that. I just can't condone it either...

OK, I don't condone that either. I also don't talk behind people's backs myself as you know by now.  My point is there have been people I didn't particularly care for and who I'm pretty sure didn't particularly care for me that I have worked with and survived because the job was more important than my personal affinity for the individuals involved. I don't care what they call you and neither should you. What I do care about and so should they is the fact that you could be a valuable member of this team, but you and them would need to toss the egos and put the work above personal differences. There does however also have to be chiefs and indians, somebody has to have the final say.

What I see (from my limited vantage point) are a bunch of intelligent, talented people with a common passion that suffers because too much time and energy is spent worrying about schoolyard BS that has nothing to do with the project. Everybody shines when the project shines and nobody does when it doesn't.

You're a big boy. Do I have to even say that "lashing out" isn't the answer. Imagine if you could see all their PM's as well? You could instantly disarm all that by making sure you're not being whatever it is they accuse you of. Maybe some are afraid you'll overshadow them if formally brought on to the team as if not doing so could prevent it. I don't know. I do know "office politics" can be an ugly thing and It would be perfectly splendid if everybody could lighten up and focus all that energy on making SMF and their related mods better. Then everybody wins.

Idealistic? Yeah, but I can dream can't I O:)

Nao,

I don't recall anyone calling you a jerk on the team boards...   Hot headed, extreme tempered, rude, sometimes out of control and lack of tact have been mentioned on occasion, but I think you might agree with all of those, at times. :)
Nothing that I haven't said to your face. :P

edit - oh yes... and what Arantor says below. We all admit your impressive knowledge, dedication and coding skills. :)

How to install/upgrade
Uninstall older versions (if already installed).
Install the new version.

Nao...  Didn't Ajax chat (possibly incorrectly) modify some bit of code that SMG (and now Aeva) was looking for?

I swear, I remember a long conversation with a bunch of people where we had to keep telling them to uninstall Aajax chat , install SMG (AM) and the re-install Ajax Chat....

Technicalities, Technicalities! I am just glad you are still around.  :)

AM 1.1 installed without glitches. The slide show is a true winner. Thanks.

Thanks for the confirmation. Thought maybe that message was left over from the V1.0 package.
I should know NAO better than that :)

Nao: And as I'm sure I said to you, there are also people there that think highly of your skills.

Thing is, most of what Kindred says applies just as equally to me, though you'd need to substitute rude for sarcastic in most cases.

imrich

I'm working on my test forum checking in new mods now that RC3 is out.

I've hit a problem with Aeva Media 1.1 (ouch).

It seems that it can't copy it's files into /Sources etc.

I manually copy the files.... to bring my forum back to life. Then can uninstall the mod (which can delete the files ok).

Does anyone have a clue where I should look first? I installed (and uninstalled them)  a few other mods without a problem (some that copy files).

I see the release notes mention changes to the package manager, so perhaps my server is sensitive to this?

One thing I notice, is that there are some require-dir directives. Perhaps these are failing as I don't end up with a mgal_data directory, perhaps this is a clue?

Any help or clues would be appreciated! Thanks! :)

Nao,

You've certainly quite a bit to help others via SMF.
Perhaps, if AEVA disappeared, someone else would do it all better within a year.  Perhaps not.
People are not commodities. At least, not the skilled and dedicated ones.

Don't rely on approval from strangers, and don't get caught up in abuse from ingrates and ingnoramuses.
You could tell them "you might be right" and then turn your attention to others who have something more interesting to offer.
We all grow up with community notions of right and wrong and how to show respect.  These notions differ culturally. And some people just ignore the nicities that make our societies go 'round.

If you took a little break to enjoy the coming spring, no sensible person would blame you.

I'm enjoying my new AEVA.  Many thanks!
